What is automobile sales?

Automobile sales refer to the process of selling new or used cars to customers, typically at a dealership. Professionals in this field, known as automobile salespeople or car sales associates, assist customers in choosing vehicles, explain features, arrange test drives, and help with financing and paperwork. The goal is to match customers with vehicles that fit their needs and preferences while ensuring a smooth buying experience. Automobile sales can also include follow-up services such as after-sales support and vehicle trade-ins.

How do automobile sales professionals typically collaborate with finance and service departments to ensure a smooth customer experience?

Automobile sales professionals work closely with finance and service departments to provide customers with seamless purchasing and post-sale experiences. After identifying a customer's needs and selecting a vehicle, sales staff coordinate with finance managers to present financing or leasing options and ensure all paperwork is completed efficiently. They also liaise with the service department to manage vehicle inspections, detailing, or accessories, and may introduce customers to service advisors for future maintenance. This collaboration helps build customer trust, facilitates repeat business, and ensures all aspects of the sale and ownership transition are handled smoothly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automobile salesperson, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automobile Salesperson, you need strong product knowledge, persuasive sales techniques, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software and dealership inventory systems is commonly required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, active listening, and resilience help build trust with customers and close deals. These competencies are vital for meeting sales targets, ensuring customer satisfaction, and maintaining a competitive edge in the automotive industry.

Automotive Sales Consultant - Full-Time | Training Provided

Porcaro Ford | Racine, Wisconsin | Two positions available

Build a Sales Career with a Local Dealership

Porcaro Ford is hiring two full-time Automotive Sales Consultants to help showroom, phone, and online customers find the right vehicle and enjoy a professional, straightforward buying experience. We are looking for motivated, outgoing, dependable people who communicate well, stay organized, and understand that consistent follow-up is a major part of serving customers successfully.

Automotive sales experience is preferred, but it is not required. We are willing to train the right candidates. If you have succeeded in customer service, hospitality, retail, wireless sales, real estate, or another performance-based role, your experience may transfer well to automotive sales.

What You Will Do

  • Welcome showroom customers promptly and create a comfortable, consultative experience.
  • Respond to internet and phone leads quickly, professionally, and with accurate information.
  • Ask thoughtful questions, listen carefully, and help customers compare new Ford and pre-owned vehicle options.
  • Conduct vehicle presentations and test drives while explaining features in clear, customer-friendly language.
  • Maintain consistent follow-up by phone, text, and email with active prospects, unsold customers, sold customers, and prior clients.
  • Use the dealership CRM every day to record activity, schedule appointments, manage tasks, and keep customer information current.
  • Work with sales managers to prepare proposals and support a clear, accurate purchase or lease process.
  • Coordinate vehicle delivery, review key features, and make sure required documents and customer requests are completed.
  • Build repeat and referral business by providing dependable service before, during, and after the sale.
  • Complete Ford product, sales-process, CRM, and compliance training and maintain required certifications.
  • Participate in sales meetings, coaching, dealership events, and ongoing product education.
  • Support a clean, organized, customer-ready showroom and vehicle display area.

Daily Expectations

  • Be on time, prepared, professionally presented, and ready to assist customers at the start of each scheduled shift.
  • Review new leads, open opportunities, appointments, and follow-up tasks at the beginning of the day.
  • Complete assigned calls, texts, emails, CRM tasks, and appointment confirmations consistently and on time.
  • Communicate clearly with customers and managers; ask for help early when information or approval is needed.
  • Follow Porcaro Ford's sales process, ethical standards, privacy practices, and applicable laws.
  • Track personal activity and results, accept coaching, and work toward realistic performance goals.

What We Are Looking For

Required qualifications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including comfort speaking with customers by phone.
  • Dependable attendance, professional judgment, and consistent follow-through.
  • A customer-first approach and the ability to build trust without using high-pressure tactics.
  • Comfort learning and using CRM software, email, text messaging, websites, and other digital tools.
  • Ability to stay organized, manage multiple customer conversations, and complete follow-up tasks.
  • Willingness to learn, accept coaching, and be accountable for activity and results.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet dealership driving and insurance requirements.
  • Ability to work a full-time retail schedule that includes some evenings and Saturdays.

Preferred qualifications

  • Automotive sales, dealership, or vehicle product experience.
  • Experience in customer service, hospitality, retail, wireless sales, real estate, inside sales, or another performance-based role.
  • Experience responding to internet leads, making outbound follow-up calls, setting appointments, or using a CRM.
  • A record of meeting customer-service, activity, or sales goals.
  • Bilingual communication skills are welcome but not required.

Schedule and Availability

This is a full-time, on-site retail sales position. Candidates must be available for a rotating schedule during sales department hours, including some evenings and Saturdays. Porcaro Ford's current sales hours are Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., and Sunday closed. Individual schedules and days off are assigned by management and may change based on business needs.

Training, Support, and Career Growth

  • Structured onboarding for the dealership sales process, CRM, lead handling, customer follow-up, and vehicle delivery.
  • Ford product knowledge and required manufacturer training.
  • Coaching from experienced sales leaders and ongoing development in communication, needs assessment, presentations, and follow-up.
  • Opportunity to grow into greater sales responsibility and, when earned and available, future leadership or other dealership roles.
  • A varied new Ford and pre-owned inventory, established dealership presence, and customer opportunities from the showroom, phone, and internet.

Benefits and Compensation

Estimated annual earnings are $55,000-$110,000, based on individual performance. Compensation is expected to include performance-based elements. The final pay plan, training compensation, bonus eligibility, and payout terms will be reviewed with qualified candidates and confirmed in writing before employment begins. This range is an estimate and is not a guarantee of earnings.
