What is an automation systems engineer?

Automation Systems Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain automated control systems used in manufacturing, industrial, or building environments. They work with hardware and software to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and ensure safety. Their responsibilities often include programming controllers, integrating sensors and actuators, and troubleshooting system issues. Automation Systems Engineers play a critical role in optimizing complex operations and reducing manual intervention.

How does an automation systems engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Automation Systems Engineers regularly work alongside professionals from multiple disciplines, such as mechanical engineers, software developers, and production managers. They often participate in project meetings to gather requirements, discuss integration points, and ensure that automation solutions align with operational objectives. Effective communication and documentation are essential, as the role involves translating technical concepts into actionable tasks for team members with different expertise. This collaborative approach helps ensure the successful deployment and optimization of automated systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automation systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automation Systems Engineer, you need strong knowledge of control systems, electrical engineering principles, and programming, typically backed by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with PLCs, SCADA systems, HMI software, and industry certifications like ISA or Siemens are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills set top performers apart in this role. These capabilities are crucial for ensuring efficient, reliable automation solutions that drive productivity and operational excellence in industrial environments.

What is the difference between Automation Systems Engineer vs Control Systems Engineer?

Job description

Overview

Tyndale is looking for an Automation & AI Agent Engineer to design, build, deploy, and support intelligent automation solutions across Robotic Process Automation, Systems Integration, AI Agents, and Agentic AI solutions. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on improving business processes through scalable, reliable, production-ready automation.

Most of these solutions will be built using an iPaaS and automation platform such as Workato, Boomi, or Zapier. This role is intended for someone who is comfortable using those types of platforms as the primary way to develop automations, orchestrate workflows, connect systems, and enable AI-driven business processes. The focus is on practical delivery through configurable platforms and integrations, not on building everything from scratch in custom code.

This person will work across business and technical teams to identify automation opportunities, build solutions that connect systems and streamline work, and support the rollout of AI-driven capabilities that increase efficiency, accuracy, and speed. The role is focused on practical execution and measurable business value.

HYBRID/REMOTE: Tyndale supports a strong work-life balance. This opportunity requires onsite work a minimum of 1 day per week, and 4 days per week remotely. To be considered, candidates must reside within a commutable distance from our corporate headquarters in Pipersville, PA (Bucks County) or our location in Houston, TX (City Centre).

About Tyndale

The Tyndale Company is a private, 9x Top Workplace winner in PA and 5x winner in TX, and an industry leading national supplier of arc-rated flame-resistant clothing (FRC) to the energy sector – including utilities, oil and gas, transportation, chemical manufacturing, and NFPA 70E markets. We’re a family-owned business providing a retail-style apparel experience to hundreds of thousands of energy workers across the US and Canada. We’re the leading distributor of innovative FRC solutions, and the largest industrial supplier of Carhartt FR, Ariat FR, and Wrangler FR clothing.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, deploy, and support automation solutions across RPA, systems integration, AI Agents, and Agentic AI workflows, primarily using an iPaaS or automation platform such as Workato, Boomi, or Zapier
  • Use platform-based tools, connectors, APIs, webhooks, and workflow orchestration capabilities to deliver scalable business automations
  • Partner with business stakeholders to understand current processes, identify pain points, and define high-value automation opportunities
  • Build and maintain integrations across internal and third-party platforms using APIs, connectors, authentication, data mapping, and event-driven workflows
  • Develop AI Agents and Agentic AI solutions within platform-based environments to retrieve context, execute tasks, orchestrate multi-step workflows, and involve human approvals when needed
  • Create automations that improve cycle time, reduce manual effort, increase accuracy, and improve the overall member and customer experience
  • Monitor automations and agent workflows in production, troubleshoot issues, resolve failures, and continuously improve performance and reliability
  • Establish and follow standards for testing, deployment, logging, exception handling, documentation, access control, and governance
  • Document technical designs, workflow logic, support procedures, and operational runbooks

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in automation engineering, integration engineering, RPA, business systems, software engineering, or a similar technical role
  • Hands-on experience building and supporting automation solutions in an iPaaS, workflow automation, or integration platform environment
  • Experience working with platforms such as Workato, Boomi, Zapier, or similar tools, and a strong understanding of how to use those platforms to design and deliver business automations
  • Experience building and supporting automation solutions in more than one of the following areas: RPA, systems integration, AI Agents, or Agentic AI solutions
  • Strong understanding of APIs, JSON, webhooks, authentication, system integrations, and workflow design
  • Experience using Python, JavaScript, or similar scripting languages for custom logic, transformations, or automation support where platform-native capabilities are not sufficient
  • Experience designing and deploying production-ready workflows with appropriate monitoring, controls, and support processes
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to translate business needs into effective technical solutions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical teams

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building AI-enabled workflows that use prompts, tools, knowledge sources, approvals, and exception handling
  • Experience with enterprise application environments involving ERP, CRM, HRIS, e-commerce, service management, or other business-critical platforms
  • Experience with automation governance, auditability, security, and lifecycle management

Benefits

  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance with competitive premiums. Paid parental leave. Mental health support through an EAP and partial reimbursement on copays, fertility support, and robust wellness programs with annual reimbursements.
  • Work-Life Balance: Many positions with Tyndale offer hybrid onsite + remote work schedules, generous PTO, paid holidays + a floating holiday, and more.
  • Financial Compensation: Competitive salary, 401(k) with matching, and bonus opportunities.
  • Career Growth & Development: Training/certification/tuition reimbursement programs and demonstrated paths for knowledge share and internal promotion opportunity.
  • Culture & Perks: Family-owned values, award winning culture, team-engagement events, casual dress code, company-sponsored charitable events and activities, and an inclusive workplace that values collaboration and integrity.
