What is an automation controls engineer?

Automation Controls Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain control systems that automate manufacturing and industrial processes. They typically work with hardware and software such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and robotic systems to ensure efficient and reliable operation of automated equipment. Their responsibilities include programming control systems, troubleshooting electrical and control issues, and collaborating with other engineers to optimize production processes. Automation Controls Engineers play a crucial role in improving productivity, safety, and quality in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, and energy.

What does an automation controls engineer do?

Automation controls engineers help create the layout of electrical and mechanical control systems. In this role, you may help program an automation process, modify existing programming when necessary, and help ensure the company is using the safest and most productive system possible for its needs. You may also be responsible for creating training documentation to show employees how to control and adjust their operations. Most automation control engineers work in manufacturing plants and similar companies where physical automation is used to speed up production tasks. This job should not be confused with automation programming outside of the manufacturing sector, such as software programming.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automation controls engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automation Controls Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, control systems, and automation, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, HMI software, and certifications like Certified Automation Professional (CAP) are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These skills ensure reliable system integration, efficient troubleshooting, and successful collaboration in complex industrial environments.

What are some common challenges automation controls engineers face when working on new system integrations?

Automation Controls Engineers often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues between legacy equipment and new control systems, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, and software), and ensuring minimal downtime during system upgrades. Troubleshooting unforeseen problems during testing phases and maintaining clear documentation are also frequent hurdles. Proactive communication and thorough planning help mitigate these challenges and ensure smooth integration projects.

What is the difference between Automation Controls Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectAutomation Controls EngineerElectrical Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in electrical, mechanical, or automation engineering; certifications like Certified Automation Professional (CAP) are commonRequires a degree in electrical engineering; licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) may be preferred
Work EnvironmentWorks primarily in manufacturing, automation, and control system settingsWorks in various sectors including power, construction, and manufacturing, often focusing on electrical systems
Industry UsageCommonly employed in automation, process control, and manufacturing industriesUsed across power generation, construction, and industrial sectors

Automation Controls Engineers focus on designing, programming, and maintaining control systems for automation processes, while Electrical Engineers have a broader scope involving electrical system design and analysis. Both roles require strong technical skills and often overlap in industrial settings, but their primary responsibilities and certifications differ.

We provide services to partner clients globally via our innovative advanced robotics technology, known as the Ocado Smart Platform ("OSP"), this drives our highly automated, multi-million dollar Customer Fulfillment Centers (CFCs). In our CFCs - together with the proprietary software applications - we operate a world-class online grocery business that automates the single pick of products, ready for your online delivery via our local partner Kroger.

What You Will Do

The Controls Engineer is a data-driven systems specialist who leverages deep PLC expertise to identify performance trends, optimize system throughput, and provide 'surgical' technical leadership. This role combines emergency troubleshooting with long-term performance engineering, using data analysis tools such as Grafana and Looker, as well as LLMs, to solve problems and enhance site performance.

This role combines deep controls engineering expertise with front-line operational ownership, providing escalation-level troubleshooting, safe modification of PLC code, system optimization through data analysis, and mentorship of Senior and Maintenance Engineers.

The position is not purely desk-based: the successful candidate must be comfortable working on live systems, responding to critical incidents, and occasionally supporting operations at night and on weekends.

Key Responsibilities1. Controls Engineering & Troubleshooting
  • Provide front-line and escalation support for live production control systems (PLC, SCADA, HMI, Safety PLCs)
  • Diagnose and resolve complex hardware and software faults using:
    • SCADA/HMI diagnostics
    • PLC code monitoring and modification (Siemens TIA Portal preferred)
    • Industrial networks (e.g. Profinet, CAN bus, barcode readers)
  • Implement temporary workarounds or controlled PLC changes to safely maintain operations when required.
  • Ensure all changes follow change control, backup, and documentation standards.
2. Safety & Compliance
  • Perform troubleshooting and system modifications in line with electrical safety and machine safety standards.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot Safety PLC systems, including interlocks, door sensors, and safety devices.
  • Promote a strong safety-first culture, including incident prevention and safe response during high-risk activities
3. Execution & Operational Excellence
  • Respond rapidly to system failures with appropriate urgency
  • Drive efficient resolution while ensuring long-term reliability (not just "quick fixes")
  • Collaborate with inventory teams to manage critical spare parts and minimize downtime
  • Support planned maintenance and quality inspections across the site.
4. Data Analysis & System Performance
  • Use operational KPIs (uptime/downtime, DPTOs, EPTIs, PM data, reactive events) to identify trends and weaknesses.
  • Propose and implement data-driven system optimizations to improve throughput, reliability, and stability.
  • Analyze complex datasets using Grafana and Looker to identify problems and systemic inefficiencies outside standard maintenance loops.
  • Produce clear Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) and performance reports for stakeholders
  • Lead Operational Improvement projects
5. Communication, Documentation & Stakeholder Management
  • Communicate clearly with Engineering Managers, Operations, SMEs, CoE, and Systems Delivery teams
  • Translate technical system behavior into actionable KPIs for site leadership, 'telling the story' of site performance through data.
  • Own the Jira pipeline for controls-related improvements, ensuring external escalations are prioritized based on ROI and operational impact.
  • Maintain high-quality documentation:
    • Work orders and tickets
    • PLC backups and version control
    • Electrical diagrams and machine documentation
6. Leadership, Mentoring & Continuous Improvement
  • Act as a technical mentor to Senior and Maintenance Engineers
  • Support upskilling programs and knowledge transfer
  • Proactively identify recurring issues and recommend preventative or design improvements
  • Stay current with new tools, technologies, and best practices in automation and controls
7. What Success Looks Like in this Role:
  • After 6 months, you aren't just reacting to alarms; you are predicting failures before they happen using trend analysis.
  • You have become the 'technical translator' for the SEOM (Site Engineering Operations Manager), turning system logs into a clear roadmap of site improvements.
  • The Maintenance teams are more effective because you have turned your findings into 'Best Practice' SOPs.
Qualifications & ExperienceRequired
  • * Associate's (bachelor's preferred) degree in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline) or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years in automation/controls roles, with 3+ years in a warehouse, distribution, or industrial environment
  • Strong hands-on experience with:
    • PLC systems (Siemens TIA Portal preferred)
