Job description

The Automotive Technician Trainee is an entry-level role within Belle Tire's Auto Tech Development Program, designed to develop the next generation of Certified Automotive Technicians. This structured, hands-on development program pairs trainees with an experienced Auto Tech Mentor to build technical skills, gain real-world shop experience, and progress into a fully qualified Automotive Technician role within 6 months.
This role is ideal for individuals currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an automotive technology program who are looking to accelerate their career in the automotive industry. Trainees will gain exposure to a wide range of vehicle systems while working in a fast-paced retail environment where you'll work on real customer vehicles and build skills that translate directly to your career.
Program Overview (Auto Tech Development Program):

  • Hands-on training across key automotive systems and repair areas
  • Defined competency milestones and career progression
  • Opportunity to earn ASE certifications and transition into a full Automotive Technician role
  • Successful completion of the Auto Tech Development Program may lead to promotion into a Certified Automotive Technician role, with continued growth opportunities within Belle Tire.

What You'll Do
Under the guidance of a certified Automotive Technician Mentor, the trainee will:
  • Properly secure vehicles to lifts and alignment machines to ensure safe operation
  • Assist with diagnosing vehicle issues and performing necessary repairs
  • Support general automotive service tasks including brakes, suspension, and basic maintenance
  • Learn and apply proper repair techniques across multiple vehicle systems
  • Communicate effectively with team members and assist in explaining repairs when needed
  • Deliver high-quality workmanship to ensure customer satisfaction
  • Stay current with evolving automotive technology, tools, and repair processes
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
  • Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and safe shop environment
  • Complete required training milestones and program competencies
  • Perform other duties as assigned by store leadership

What We're Looking For
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Current student or recent graduate (within 6 months) of an ASE-accredited automotive technology program
  • Completion of coursework in brakes and steering/suspension preferred
  • State of Michigan Mechanic Trainee Permit (or ability to obtain within required timeframe)
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • Must obtain required tools within designated timeframe (program support available)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • ASE certifications (A4, A5, A6 or relevant areas)
  • Prior hands-on automotive experience (school, internship, or shop environment)

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to safely lift up to 75 pounds to chest level
  • Frequent bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, reaching, and use of hands/wrists consistent with automotive repair work

Work Environment
This position is based within a tire and automotive service retail store. Varying work hours, Monday through Saturday. Fast-paced workshop setting with physical demands, including extended standing and heavy lifting.
