What does an auto insurance agent do?

An auto insurance agent helps clients find and purchase the right car insurance coverage for their needs. They assess clients’ risk profiles, explain different policy options, provide quotes, and assist with filing claims if an accident occurs. Agents also answer questions about coverage, discounts, and state requirements, ensuring customers have adequate protection while meeting legal obligations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an auto insurance agent, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Auto Insurance Agent, you need a solid understanding of insurance products, state regulations, and sales techniques, typically supported by a high school diploma and a state insurance license. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software and quoting systems is crucial for managing client information and generating policy quotes. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and problem-solving abilities help agents build trust and effectively address client needs. These skills are vital for meeting sales targets, ensuring customer satisfaction, and maintaining compliance within a competitive industry.

What are some common challenges auto insurance agents face when meeting sales targets, and how can they overcome them?

Auto Insurance Agents often encounter challenges such as increased competition, clients' price sensitivity, and rapidly changing industry regulations. To overcome these, agents benefit from building strong relationships with clients, staying updated on policy changes, and developing consultative sales skills to tailor coverage to individual needs. Leveraging technology, such as CRM systems, can also help agents track leads and efficiently manage renewals. Collaboration with underwriters and claims adjusters further ensures agents can provide comprehensive support, strengthening client trust and retention.

What is the difference between Auto Insurance Agent vs Insurance Broker?

AspectAuto Insurance AgentInsurance Broker

Employer & Industry UsageInsurance companies, agenciesBrokerage firms, independent agencies
Primary RoleSell auto insurance policies directly to clientsFind and recommend auto insurance policies from multiple providers

Auto Insurance Agents typically work for specific insurance companies, selling policies directly to customers, while Insurance Brokers act independently or for brokerages, offering clients a variety of policies from different providers. Both roles require licensing and involve client consultation, but their employer structures and scope of product offerings differ.

Why do most auto insurance agents quit?

Auto insurance agents often leave the profession due to high competition, commission-based pay structures, and the pressure to meet sales targets. The job requires strong sales skills, persistence, and the ability to handle rejection, which can lead to burnout and high turnover rates.

Job description

Davis Insurance is an independent agency that's been protecting Kentucky and Tennessee families and businesses since 1993. We represent top carriers including Erie Insurance, Auto-Owners, Progressive, Grange, Foremost, and West Bend across personal lines, commercial, life, and Medicare. With offices in Bowling Green and Leitchfield, we're built on long-term client relationships, not call-center churn.

We're looking for a hunter — someone energized by building a book of business from the ground up. This is a self-prospecting role for an agent who'd rather drive their own pipeline than wait on warm transfers. You'll write a mix of personal and commercial lines, with full carrier access and the back-end support to compete on coverage and price.

If you're the kind of person who walks into a Chamber lunch already thinking about who to introduce yourself to, you'll do well here.

Responsibilities
  • Build and work your own pipeline through networking, referrals,, community involvement, centers of influence (CPAs, lenders, realtors), and outbound prospecting
  • Quote and write personal lines (auto, home, life, umbrella) and commercial lines (BOPs, commercial auto, workers' comp, general liability) across our full carrier panel
  • Run discovery conversations that uncover the full coverage picture — not just the policy in front of you
  • Round out accounts at the point of sale; treat every quote as a potential multi-policy household or business
  • Cross-sell within your book to deepen client relationships and increase retention
  • Maintain accurate records, follow-ups, and pipeline activity in AgencyZoom (our CRM)
  • Hit production targets that grow your draw, your renewals, and your long-term income
  • Represent Davis Insurance well in the community — at networking events and wherever Kentucky business gets done
Requirements

Required

  • Hunter mentality — motivated by activity, comfortable with rejection, and don't need someone handing you leads
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, in person and on the phone
  • Self-discipline and accountability — this role rewards people who run their own day
  • Coachable mindset and willingness to learn carrier appetites, underwriting, and sales process
  • Reliable transportation and a clean professional presence
  • Active Kentucky Property Casualty license preferred — for the right person, we'll sponsor licensing

Preferred

  • Prior insurance, sales, financial services, or B2B experience
  • Established local network in South Central Kentucky
  • Familiarity with agency management systems
  • Life Health license (or willingness to add it)
