What is an Audit RN?

An Audit RN is a Registered Nurse who specializes in reviewing medical records and healthcare documentation to ensure accuracy, compliance, and quality of care. They work with healthcare providers, insurance companies, or auditing firms to verify that billing and coding practices meet regulatory standards. How does an Audit RN typically collaborate with other departments during an audit process?

An Audit RN works closely with departments such as billing, coding, quality assurance, and clinical teams to review medical records for accuracy and compliance. This collaborative approach helps maintain high standards of patient care and regulatory compliance throughout the organization.

To thrive as an Audit RN, you need a solid background in clinical nursing, knowledge of healthcare regulations, and experience with medical record review, typically supported by an RN license and clinical experience. Familiarity with coding systems (ICD-10, CPT), utilization review software, and electronic health records (EHRs) is commonly required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role.
