Job Summary

Library Service Associates connect customers to library resources, services, and programs. They assist customers with various circulation tasks as well as troubleshoot patron issues, and answer basic research questions. They ensure a safe and welcoming environment and provide quality programming. Library Service Associates work under the general supervision of Librarians and Managers.
Typical Schedule:
Mondays - Fridays: 8:45 am - 5:15 pm
Rotating Saturdays: 9:15 am - 4:15 pm
Essential Duties
1. Assist customers with using the Library
  • Greet customers in a friendly and professional manner
  • Meet customers' needs for information by answering basic research questions and locating appropriate library resources, providing referrals when necessary
  • Recommend materials based on customer preferences and knowledge of the collection
  • Assist customers in finding specific items on shelves
  • Perform customer service for library accounts, as well as checking materials in and out
  • Provide help with library technology such as public computers, the Library catalog, and digital resources

2. Conducts the day-to-day operations of a department or branch
  • Monitor and appropriately address behavior issues to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all customers
  • Maintain a pleasant, inviting environment in the Library by creating displays and signage, etc.
  • Maintain orderly and attractive collections and withdraw items as appropriate
  • Assist with training and monitoring the work of other Library employees and volunteers
  • Submit statistics and other reports of library services

3. Support the mission and strategic goals of the Library
  • Develop, promote, and implement events and programs under the guidance of manager and provide programming support for other Library employees

  • Implement system-wide programs such as annual summer reading programs
  • Promote library programs, resources, and services to customers
  • Assist with large-scale projects and events
  • Serve on system-wide committees as assigned or required
  • Attend and participate in staff and departmental meetings, as well as training sessions
  • Recruit and coordinate the work of library volunteers
  • Perform other related duties as needed or assigned

Minimum Qualifications Required
Education and Experience
Associate Degree, two years of college or university, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  1. Demonstrate basic knowledge of library operations, services and materials
  2. Effectively administer Brown County Library policies and procedures
  3. Assess users' needs and provide consistently exceptional customer service
  4. Complete closing duties, including clearing and securing the building

Retirement
Brown County and the Brown County Library participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) which helps provide for financial security during retirement. Monthly annuity payments at retirement are calculated using years of creditable service, average earnings (based on three highest years of earnings), formula factors, age at retirement and selected annuity option or a money purchase option. Eligibility is based on authorized hours per week.
Flexible Spending AccountThe Flexible Spending Account saves money by allowing the employee to pay for certain insurance premiums, medical related expenses, and dependent care expenses on a pre-tax basis. All employees are eligible to participate.
Deferred CompensationDeferred Compensation allows employees to set aside pre-tax earnings toward retirement. All the earnings will accrue tax-free until such time as the assets are withdrawn, generally at retirement. All employees are eligible to participate.
