What is the difference between Audio Mixing vs Audio Editing?

AspectAudio MixingAudio Editing
Primary FocusBalancing and blending multiple audio tracks to create a cohesive soundCutting, arranging, and refining audio clips for clarity and accuracy
Skills & CertificationsKnowledge of mixing consoles, DAWs, and audio effects; certifications varyProficiency in editing software; often requires audio engineering knowledge
Work EnvironmentRecording studios, post-production facilities, live sound setupsPost-production studios, editing suites, film and video production
Industry UsageMusic, film, TV, video gamesFilm, TV, podcasts, multimedia projects

Audio Mixing involves blending multiple tracks to achieve the desired sound balance, while Audio Editing focuses on refining individual audio clips for clarity and precision. Both roles are essential in audio production but serve different stages of the process.

What are some common challenges audio mixing engineers face when working on projects with tight deadlines?

Audio mixing engineers often encounter the challenge of balancing high-quality output with time constraints, especially on projects with tight deadlines. This can mean making quick decisions about EQ, compression, and effects while ensuring the mix remains clear and balanced. Communication with producers, artists, and other team members is crucial, as last-minute feedback or revisions are common. Staying organized and using efficient workflows, such as template sessions or recall sheets, helps maintain consistency and meet client expectations, even under pressure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Audio Mixer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Audio Mixer, you need a strong understanding of sound theory, acoustics, and audio editing, often supported by formal training or a degree in audio engineering. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools, Logic Pro, and mixing consoles, as well as knowledge of industry-standard plugins and software, is essential. Attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and strong communication skills help set outstanding audio mixers apart. These skills are vital for producing high-quality sound that meets artistic and technical standards in music, film, or broadcast environments.

What Are Audio Mixing Jobs?

Audio mixing jobs involve working on post-production in a recording studio or other production facility. An audio engineer or mixer can also work during recording to ensure that the music or sound meets quality requirements. After they record the audio, a mixer uses computers and other post-production equipment to edit the different tracks to create a completed product. Your duties can include mixing several different tracks to achieve the highest quality. You use software such as ProTools to synchronize various audio elements. Your responsibilities include working with producers to ensure that the finished product meets expectations.

What is audio mixing?

Audio mixing is the process of blending and balancing multiple sound sources, such as vocals, instruments, and effects, into a single cohesive audio track. This involves adjusting levels, applying equalization (EQ), adding effects like reverb or compression, and panning sounds within the stereo field. The goal is to create a polished and professional sound that highlights the important elements of a song or recording. Audio mixing can be done using digital audio workstations (DAWs) or analog equipment, and it's a crucial step in music production and post-production for films, TV, and podcasts.

Job description

Join Axon and be a Force for Good.
At Axon, we're on a mission to Protect Life. We're explorers, pursuing society's most critical safety and justice issues with our ecosystem of devices and cloud software. Like our products, we work better together. We connect with candor and care, seeking out diverse perspectives from our customers, communities and each other.
Life at Axon is fast-paced, challenging and meaningful. Here, you'll take ownership and drive real change. Constantly grow as you work hard for a mission that matters at a company where you matter.
Your Impact
As an Electrical Engineer II on Axon's Video Electrical Engineering team, you will be a key hands-on contributor to the design and delivery of next-generation video hardware. You will own the detailed design, bring-up, validation, and debug of key circuits and subsystems, working closely with senior electrical engineers and cross-functional partners to translate product and architecture goals into robust, manufacturable hardware. Your technical skill, curiosity, and execution will directly contribute to the performance, reliability, and quality of products used every day in the field.
What You'll Do
  • Design and develop high-quality embedded electronic circuits and subsystems for Axon's video products, wired and wireless devices, and low-power accessories.
  • Own detailed design and implementation of mixed-signal hardware blocks in collaboration with senior electrical engineers and cross-functional partners.
  • Contribute to subsystem architecture and hardware design decisions, helping translate system requirements into practical circuit implementations.
  • Create embedded mixed-signal schematics in OrCAD, integrating components such as application processors, memory, high-speed digital interfaces, RF transceivers, power supplies, battery charging systems, audio, and sensors.
  • Work closely with PCB design engineers to define requirements, review layouts, and improve implementation quality for dense, high-performance embedded boards.
  • Personally bring up, characterize, debug, and validate circuits and systems using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, power supplies, multimeters, and custom test setups.
  • Analyze test data, identify root causes, and drive corrective actions to improve performance, robustness, and reliability.
  • Improve designs through simulation, bench measurement, and iterative development to meet product, system, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and maintain BOMs, design documentation, test plans, and release materials needed to support development and manufacturing.
  • Support design verification, manufacturing bring-up, and issue resolution through prototype, validation, and production phase.
  • Contribute to design reviews, technical problem solving, and knowledge sharing across the team.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or similar engineering discipline.
  • 4+ years of industry experience designing embedded electronics, with solid depth in high-speed, high-density, portable, battery-powered products.
  • Demonstrated experience owning and delivering hardware circuits or subsystems within complex embedded products.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded mixed-signal hardware design involving several of the following areas: application processors or microcontrollers, image sensors, memory subsystems, power delivery, battery charging, audio, sensors, wired interfaces, and wireless integration.
  • Strong hands-on proficiency in board bring-up, characterization, troubleshooting, and debug using laboratory tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, power supplies, multimeters, and custom jigs.
  • Experience designing schematics, selecting components, developing BOMs, and supporting hardware integration using industry-standard tools; experience with Cadence/OrCAD is preferred.
  • Experience working with PCB design engineers to support layout definition, review implementation quality, and help drive successful multilayer HDI rigid, flex, or rigid-flex board designs.
  • Good understanding of power system design, including point-of-load regulators, PMIC integration, power trees, power measurement, and battery-powered design considerations.
  • Experience with high-speed interfaces and dense embedded hardware design, including awareness of layout, signal integrity, and implementation considerations.
  • Experience supporting product development through prototype build, validation, manufacturing bring-up, and issue resolution.
  • Familiarity with designing electronics to meet regulatory requirements such as FCC, CE, IEC, or similar standards.
  • Independent contributor who works effectively with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to deliver results in a fast-paced product development environment.
  • Strong documentation, analysis, communication, and collaboration skills.
