What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an audio engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Audio Engineer, you need a solid understanding of sound theory, audio signal flow, and recording techniques, typically supported by a degree or certification in audio engineering or a related field. Proficiency with digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools or Logic Pro, as well as familiarity with mixing consoles, microphones, and audio plugins, is essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help audio engineers collaborate with artists and troubleshoot technical issues. These skills and qualities ensure high-quality audio production and smooth workflow in both studio and live environments.

What jobs can an audio engineer do?

An audio engineer can work in various roles such as recording engineer, live sound engineer, mixing engineer, mastering engineer, broadcast engineer, and sound designer. They typically operate audio equipment, use digital audio workstations, and may work in studios, concert venues, film production, or broadcasting environments.

What is the difference between Audio Engineering vs Sound Design?

AspectAudio EngineeringSound Design
CredentialsTypically requires a degree or certification in audio engineering or related fieldOften requires a background in audio production, music, or sound design courses
Work EnvironmentRecording studios, live venues, broadcasting, post-productionFilm, video games, theater, multimedia projects
Industry UsageUsed across music, broadcasting, live sound, and post-productionPrimarily in film, gaming, and multimedia industries

Audio engineering focuses on capturing, mixing, and producing sound recordings, while sound design involves creating and manipulating audio elements for various media. Both roles require technical skills, but their applications and environments differ significantly.

Are audio engineers in high demand?

Audio engineers are in moderate demand, especially in the music, film, and broadcasting industries, where technical skills with digital audio workstations and recording equipment are valued. Employment growth is steady but competitive, often requiring specialized training or certifications to improve job prospects.

What is audio engineering?

Audio engineering is the process of capturing, manipulating, mixing, and reproducing sound using both analog and digital equipment. Audio engineers work in various settings such as recording studios, live concerts, film production, and broadcasting. Their responsibilities include setting up microphones, operating mixing consoles, editing audio files, and ensuring the highest possible sound quality. Audio engineers often collaborate with musicians, producers, and other technical staff to achieve desired sonic results.

What are some common challenges audio engineers face during live events, and how can they prepare for them?

Audio engineers working live events often encounter unexpected technical issues such as equipment malfunctions, feedback, or changing acoustics due to audience size. Preparing for these challenges involves conducting thorough sound checks, creating backup plans for key equipment, and maintaining clear communication with performers and production teams. Adaptability and troubleshooting skills are essential, as quick decision-making ensures audio quality remains high throughout the event. Regularly updating technical knowledge and collaborating closely with stage crews can also help prevent and address issues efficiently.

What do you do as an audio engineer?

An audio engineer is responsible for recording, mixing, and editing sound for music, film, television, or live events. They operate equipment such as microphones, mixing consoles, and digital audio workstations, and often require technical skills and certifications to ensure high-quality sound production.

FieldAI

Irvine, CA • On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 9 days ago

Job description

Job Summary:
FieldAI is a company based in Irvine, California, focused on building risk-aware, reliable AI systems for robotics. They are seeking a Network Software Engineer to design and deploy low-latency communication systems that enable real-time interaction between robots and remote operators, tackling challenges like network handoffs and maintaining performance under varying conditions.
Responsibilities:
• Build low-latency, bidirectional audio/video streaming systems for telepresence and teleoperation
• Design and optimize real-time communication over private 5G and heterogeneous networks
• Monitor and improve network performance (latency, jitter, packet loss, throughput) in dynamic environments
• Implement QoS strategies, congestion control, and adaptive streaming for reliable operation
• Develop, test, and deploy communication systems directly on robotic platforms
• Ensure robust performance under mobility, degraded connectivity, and real-world conditions
Qualifications:
Required:
• MS or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
• Strong experience building real-time or near real-time communication systems (e.g., TCP/UDP, RTP/RTCP, WebRTC)
• Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, especially in wireless and cellular contexts (latency, jitter, handoffs, bandwidth constraints)
• Experience working with Linux networking and debugging tools (e.g., tcpdump, iperf, ss, iw)
• Familiarity with distributed systems and device-to-cloud communication architectures
• Experience developing and validating systems on physical hardware, not just simulations
• Working knowledge of ROS/ROS2 or similar frameworks for distributed robotic systems
Preferred:
• Experience deploying systems over cellular networks (LTE/5G), including private 5G setups
• Background in telepresence, teleoperation, or real-time audio/video streaming systems
• Deep understanding of adaptive bitrate, congestion control, QoS, and fault-tolerant networking
• Experience with media and streaming frameworks (e.g., WebRTC, GStreamer, RTP pipelines)
• Familiarity with mesh networking or device-to-device communication systems
• Experience designing systems that gracefully handle intermittent connectivity and mobility
• Strong ownership mindset, from system design through real-world deployment and iteration
Company:
FieldAI is building general robot intelligence for the physical world. Founded in 2023, the company is headquartered in Mission Viejo, USA, with a team of 201-500 employees. The company is currently Growth Stage.
