JOB DESCRIPTION
ATHLETIC TRAINER (EXTRACURRICULAR)
Salary: As Per Boone County Schools Extracurricular Salary Schedule
Reports To: Principal and Athletic Director
Employment Term: Seasonal Supplemental Position
Position Purpose
The Athletic Trainer is responsible for providing athletic training services to student-athletes participating in Boone County Schools athletic programs. The Athletic Trainer shall assist in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and management of athletic injuries while promoting the health, safety, and well-being of student-athletes. The Athletic Trainer works collaboratively with coaches, administrators, parents, physicians, and emergency medical personnel to ensure safe participation in athletics.
Qualifications
- Certified Athletic Trainer through WVDE
- Licensed or eligible for licensure as an Athletic Trainer in the State of West Virginia preferred.
- Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification required.
- EMT, Advanced EMT, Paramedic, Registered Nurse, Physical Therapist, or other qualified medical credential may be considered as approved by the Superintendent and Boone County Board of Education.
- Demonstrated knowledge of athletic injuries, emergency response procedures, and sports medicine principles.
- Meets all Boone County Schools and WVSSAC employment requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Athletic Event Coverage
- Provide athletic training coverage for home athletic contests and other assigned events.
- Attend practices as assigned by the Athletic Director or Principal.
- Respond to injuries and medical emergencies involving student-athletes.
- Coordinate emergency medical services when necessary.
Injury Management
- Assess and evaluate athletic injuries occurring during practices and contests.
- Provide immediate first aid and emergency care.
- Recommend appropriate follow-up care and referral to healthcare providers when necessary.
- Assist with return-to-play recommendations in accordance with physician guidance and applicable protocols.
Student-Athlete Safety
- Assist with implementation of concussion management procedures.
- Monitor environmental conditions and recommend modifications when necessary to protect student-athletes.
- Promote injury prevention strategies and safe athletic participation.
- Maintain emergency action plans and ensure emergency equipment is readily available.
Communication
- Communicate with coaches regarding athlete participation status and safety concerns.
- Maintain professional communication with parents, physicians, and school administrators regarding injuries and medical concerns.
- Complete injury reports and other required documentation.
Program Support
- Support Boone County Schools' commitment to sportsmanship, character development, and student safety.
- Assist coaches and administrators in maintaining a safe athletic environment.
- Attend meetings and training sessions as required.
- Perform other duties related to athletic health and safety as assigned by the Principal or Athletic Director.
Physical Demands
The Athletic Trainer must be able to stand, walk, run, bend, kneel, lift equipment, and respond quickly to athletic emergencies in indoor and outdoor environments.
Evaluation
Performance shall be evaluated by the Principal and Athletic Director in accordance with Boone County Schools policies and procedures.
Terms of Employment
Employment shall be in accordance with West Virginia Code, WVSSAC regulations, Boone County Board of Education policies, and the approved extracurricular salary schedule.
