What is an athletic trainer manager?

Athletic Trainer Managers are professionals who oversee the operations and staff of athletic training departments, commonly found in schools, universities, clinics, or professional sports organizations. They are responsible for supervising athletic trainers, developing injury prevention programs, ensuring proper care and rehabilitation for athletes, and managing budgets and administrative tasks. These managers also coordinate with coaches, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure athletes receive appropriate medical attention and support. They play a critical role in promoting athlete health and safety while maintaining high standards of care in their organizations.

How does an athletic trainer manager balance administrative duties with direct athlete care?

As an Athletic Trainer Manager, balancing administrative responsibilities—such as scheduling staff, managing budgets, and ensuring compliance with regulations—with direct athlete care is a common challenge. Typically, you’ll allocate part of your week to hands-on evaluation and treatment of athletes, while the rest is spent on meetings, overseeing documentation, and coordinating with coaches and healthcare providers. Effective time management and delegation are key to maintaining high standards in both areas. Many managers find success by establishing clear routines and leveraging support from assistant trainers and administrative staff.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an athletic trainer manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Athletic Trainer Manager, you need expertise in injury prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, and a relevant bachelor's or master's degree with appropriate certification, such as the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers. Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems, rehabilitation equipment, and compliance standards like OSHA and HIPAA is typically required. Leadership, effective communication, and organizational skills help in managing staff and coordinating care across teams. These skills ensure the efficient operation of athletic training programs, promote athlete safety, and foster a collaborative work environment.
