Job description

Position: Crew Worker
Department: Parks & Recreation
Division: Athletic Field Maintenance
Rate of Pay: $14.50/hr.
Job Summary:
This position involves manual labor related to the upkeep and maintenance of public facilities, athletic fields, and recreational areas. The incumbent will work outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme summer heat and winter cold. The role requires operating equipment, performing routine maintenance, and ensuring that parks, recreational spaces, and athletic fields are clean, safe, and in good playing condition. Work may be performed outside normal business hours, including weekends and evenings.
Essential Functions:
The duties listed below are representative of the position but may not be all-inclusive. Other responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
Facility and Equipment Maintenance
• Perform routine maintenance, repair, and cleaning of pavilions, press boxes, buildings, courts, field, fencing and other park structures.
• Paint and perform minor carpentry work, such as painting, pressure washing, repairing picnic tables and benches.
• Conduct preventative maintenance on facilities, including plumbing repairs and minor electrical work.
• Collect and dispose of trash and debris.
• Clean and disinfect restrooms and other public-use areas to maintain sanitary conditions.
Athletic Field and Turf Maintenance
• Prepare athletic fields and courts for events, ensuring they meet regulation standards.
• Groom and line fields by measuring and marking boundaries as per applicable rules.
• Perform dirt work on infields, including leveling, grading, and conditioning to ensure safe and consistent playing surfaces.
• Install and maintain sports fixtures such as bases, nets, goalposts, basketball hoops, and flags.
• Maintain irrigation systems, including repairing or replacing sprinkler heads as needed.
• Perform turf maintenance including aeration, fertilization, overseeding, and topdressing to ensure healthy grass coverage.
• Mow and edge fields, parks, and common areas using riding and push mowers, weed eaters, and edging tools.
• Identify and address issues such as bare spots, erosion, and poor drainage to maintain optimal field conditions.
Vehicle and Equipment Operation & Maintenance
• Operate a variety of City-owned vehicles and equipment, such as trucks, tractors, bobcats, infield groomers, pressure washers, blowers, and other specialized tools.
• Perform routine vehicle maintenance including oil and filter changes, part replacements, and adjustments.
• Conduct inspections on equipment to ensure proper working condition, while completing required maintenance reports.
Additional Responsibilities
• Provide support for City-sponsored events, programs, and activities outside of athletics, including setup, teardown, and logistical assistance.
• Assist with general maintenance and event preparation at City-owned venues and public spaces.
• Occasionally provide support to other departments as needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• High school diploma or GED.
• At least two months of prior experience and/or training in groundskeeping, facility maintenance, or a related field in athletics is preferred.
• A combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Mississippi driver's license.
