General Description of Position:
The middle school director of Athletics is responsible to the building principal to have the major responsibility for the coordination and supervision of high school physical education and athletic programs and shall work to see that these programs are compatible with the educational philosophy of the School City of Hammond.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
• Be responsible to the school principal
• Establish objectives for the program and develop a plan for the implementation and evaluation of
the program
• Coordinate the school physical education and extra-curricular athletic activities with the total school educational program
• Serve as the athletic equipment manager of the School City of Hammond Conduct staff meetings
• Conduct staff meetings
• Set up plans for the efficient ordering, purchasing, and receiving of equipment and supplies,
following guidelines of the city Supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics
• Supervise the operation of the school's physical education and athletic program
• Foster a goo intra-faculty relationship between the physical education athletic staff and other faculty members
• Delegate specific responsibility to coaches with regards to practice time, locker room supervision, equipment issue, equipment care, attendance at meetings and other department obligations
• Be responsible that the school physical education and athletic program is operated according to Hammond School Board Policy, the Indiana High School Athletic Association rules and regulations,
and the Indiana Lake Shore conference rules and regulations. the follow through with proper public relations with parents, newspapers, radio stations, booster clubs, PTA, service clubs, etc.
• Attend workshops, in-service meetings, clinics, and other activities which are necessary for professional growth as approved by the principal
• Be responsible for such routine matters as player eligibility, team transportation, official contract, game contracts, athletic budgets, schedules, and other such miscellaneous matters necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the school athletic program
• Assist in the organization of cheerleading and booster groups
• Insist on proper conduct of players, students, and adults at all athletic contests
• Crowd control at the athletic contests in a definite responsibility of the School Director of Physical Education and Athletics
• Work with the teachers, athletic staff, and school administration to develop sound rules for the dress, conduct, and general appearance of the school athletes
• Place all orders for departmental newspapers, magazines, and books. Keep those records as required by the IHSAA and City Athletic Department and keep up with all necessary departmental correspondence
• Maintain a complete inventory of all athletic equipment. If any equipment is lost or stolen, a report of this equipment should be sent to the school principal and city Supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics
• Set up with each teacher and coach the procedures for handling athletic equipment. This will include the issuing of equipment, cleaning of equipment, and renovation of equipment
• Work closely with each teacher and coach in estimating the cost of equipment and supplies for annual budget proposal
• Develop specific forms for keeping records on equipment issued in each sport
• Develop procedures for managing those students who carelessly lose or damage equipment
• Work with all physical education teachers and athletic coaches to maintain the appearance of all school athletic areas. This includes locker rooms, athletic offices, equipment storage area, gymnasiums, etc.
• Determine, along with the teachers and coaches, the best procedures for handling towels, and develop procedures to minimize the loss of towels
• Work with the coaches in each sport to develop a program of procuring, selecting, and training student managers
• Assist all teachers and coaches in determining specific areas for storing and using medical supplies and equipment
• Insist that all teachers, coaches, managers, and players take proper care of supplies and equipment assigned to their sport
• Work with head coach in each sport to determine the role of assistant coaches in equipment responsibility
• The city Supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics will inspect the physical education and athletic facilities at regular intervals to ascertain that the above listed duties
QUALIFICATIONS
• Be able to establish and maintain effective relationships with pupils, parent, faculty, and staff
• Have a thorough knowledge of general education gained through preparation and experience
• Be thoroughly understanding of specific preparation, content, skills, and procedures in physical education and athletic administration
• Be thoroughly familiar with the various organizations which set standards for athletic participation
• Have a working knowledge of the rules and regulations which pertain to the total sports program
• Be available beyond the school day for activities
EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION
• Personnel are recommended annually by the building principal and approved by the Superintendent. Compensation will be determined by the School City of Hammond agreement
• Performance of the job will be evaluated annually
