JV Assistant Softball Coach
Position Purpose
Under the direction of the JV Head Softball Coach, Varsity Softball Coach, Athletic Director, and High School Principal, the JV Assistant Softball Coach supports the planning, organization, supervision, and implementation of the junior varsity softball program. The assistant coach works with student-athletes to develop fundamental skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, self-discipline, and character while supporting the overall goals of Buena Vista City Public Schools athletics.
Reports To
Athletic Director, in conjunction with the High School Principal, Varsity Softball Coach, and JV Head Softball Coach.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to assist in organizing and supervising a secondary-level softball program.
  • Previous coaching experience in softball or a related sport preferred.
  • Knowledge of softball fundamentals, strategies, rules, and safety practices.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, officials, and community members.
  • Commitment to professional growth and continuous learning.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model and mentor for student-athletes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists the JV Head Softball Coach in implementing the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the softball program.
  • Provides instruction in fundamental skills, team concepts, conditioning, and game strategy.
  • Assists with planning and conducting practices.
  • Supports supervision of student-athletes during practices, games, team activities, and travel.
  • Promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, self-discipline, leadership, and positive character development.
  • Assists with monitoring student-athlete academic progress, eligibility, attendance, and conduct.
  • Reinforces team rules, expectations, procedures, and standards.
  • Assists with injury prevention, emergency procedures, and required documentation.
  • Supports supervision of student managers, statisticians, and other team support personnel as assigned.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the JV Head Coach, Varsity Coach, Athletic Director, or Principal.

Administrative Responsibilities
  • Assists with scheduling, transportation, games, tournaments, and special events.
  • Helps prepare athletic facilities and ensures adherence to assigned schedules.
  • Assists with required documentation related to student eligibility, physical examinations, parental consent, and participation.
  • Supports the care, maintenance, inventory, and security of athletic equipment, uniforms, and facilities.
  • Communicates equipment and program needs to the JV Head Coach as appropriate.
  • Provides recommendations and feedback to the coaching staff and Athletic Director as requested.

Student Supervision and Safety
  • Maintains appropriate supervision of student-athletes at all times.
  • Ensures students remain in authorized areas during practices, games, and team events.
  • Assists with implementation of established safety procedures, injury response protocols, and emergency procedures.
  • Promotes proper and safe use of facilities and equipment.
  • Promotes respect for school property, athletic facilities, equipment, teammates, opponents, and officials.

Public Relations and Communication
  • Assists with preseason meetings for parents and student-athletes as appropriate.
  • Supports positive and professional relationships with parents, officials, booster organizations, school personnel, and community members.
  • Communicates professionally and appropriately when representing BVCPS athletics.
  • Assists with sharing schedules, results, program information, and other communications as directed.
  • Supports the softball program and BVCPS athletics in a positive and professional manner.

Terms of Employment
  • Seasonal position; stipend paid in accordance with the BVCPS athletic coaching stipend schedule.
  • Employment contingent upon School Board approval.
  • Employment contingent upon completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check and a Department of Social Services (DSS) Child Protective Services background check, in accordance with Virginia law and BVCPS policy.
  • Completion of all required VHSL and division-mandated training
