Job Summary
Reporting to the Director, the Residential Tutor will provide supplemental instruction in Mathematics, English, Science, and Foreign Languages to 70 LAUSD high school students. Residential Tutors assist in assigned courses, offering academic support and guidance to enhance student learning. Additionally, they supervise students' daily activities, ensuring a positive and structured environment. Residential Tutors will reside in the residence hall for six weeks to fulfill their responsibilities.
Job Duties
  • 60% - Administrative Collaborate with a six-person team, taking on various roles such as contributor, leader, and negotiator. Work closely with summer instructors to assist program participants under the teacher's direction. Plan and lead workshops and study review sessions in the evenings. Provide academic support to assigned tutees in both group and individual settings. Instruct students on emergency procedures and assist with crisis management as needed. Ensure safety and health regulations are followed in the residence hall and on campus. Assist with administrative tasks, including preparing materials and supplies for activities. Conduct study sessions to help students prepare for midterms, essays, and finals. Help students with daily homework and projects. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Supervision Supervise students daily throughout the program, ensuring adherence to policies. Complete weekly reports and other required program documentation. Assist in enforcing program policies, including study hours, curfews, and discipline standards set by the Project Director. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Student Support/Advisement Plan and implement activities to foster a sense of community within the residence hall. Provide support in developing study skills such as time management, note-taking, and test-taking through workshops. Organize icebreaker and team-building activities to promote student engagement. Support students in their academic goals and aspirations for higher education. Be on-call 24 hours per day, five days a week. Perform other duties as assigned. - (Essential)

Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an associate or bachelor's degree program.
  • Experience in tutoring or teaching in Mathematics, English, Science, or Foreign Languages.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications or any combination of productivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Strong commitment to a quality work product.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically.
  • Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in education, Liberal Arts, Mathematics, English, Science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of experience working with TRIO and Educational Equity Programs.
  • One year of experience working with low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students in roles such as a tutor, teacher's aide, or counselor assistant.
  • One year of experience living and working in a college residential setting.
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing, with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, and maintain good standing at their current institution.

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $17.87/hr. Please note that this position is not eligible for benefits.
