Job description

Overview
The Department of Physics at Auburn University is seeking a dedicated and motivated Engineer Associate to support the department's experimental research activities and laboratory facilities in the Leach Science Center. The Engineer Associate will provide technical support to faculty, staff, and students engaged in experimental research and assist with the operation, maintenance, and development of laboratory equipment and facilities. The role involves working collaboratively with research groups to maintain safe, effective, and well-functioning laboratory environments that support a broad range of physics research activities.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with the operation, maintenance, and upkeep of departmental research equipment, including the pelletron accelerator and pool source irradiator located in the Leach Science Center.+
  • Provide technical support for experimental laboratory spaces in the Leach Science Center and assist with the maintenance and operation of research equipment and facilities.
  • Provide guidance and technical support to faculty, staff, and students on laboratory design, equipment modification, prototype development, processes, and related engineering solutions with an emphasis on safe laboratory practices.
  • Provide engineering support for a variety of research activities and projects involving the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment and facilities.
  • Design and/or fabricate equipment and materials utilizing engineering practices and principles.
  • Support procurement, organization, and maintenance of laboratory supplies, tools, and equipment used in departmental research activities.
  • Serve as the department's primary point of contact with the College of Science and Mathematics building manager and Auburn University facilities management to provide oversight to the Leach Science Center building safety, security, and maintenance activities.

Qualifications
Level I:
  • Associate's Degree in Physics, Engineering, Mechanics, Electronics, or a related field and 6 years of experience in engineering practices and principles.

Level II:
  • Associate's Degree in Physics, Engineering, Mechanics, Electronics, or a related field and 8 years of experience in engineering practices and principles.

Level III:
  • Associate's Degree in Physics, Engineering, Mechanics, Electronics, or a related field and 10 years of experience in engineering practices and principles.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
  • May require position related licensure such as radioactive materials handling license - Upon Hire.

SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED FOR EDUCATION: Yes, When a candidate has the required experience, but lacks the required education, they may normally apply additional relevant experience toward the education requirement, at a rate of two (2) years relevant experience per year of required education.
