What is the difference between Associate Software Tester vs QA Tester?

AspectAssociate Software TesterQA Tester
CertificationsBasic testing certifications, such as ISTQB FoundationSimilar certifications, often with more experience required
Work EnvironmentEntry-level testing in software development teamsSimilar, often in larger QA teams or departments
ResponsibilitiesExecuting test cases, reporting bugs, learning testing processesDesigning test plans, analyzing results, ensuring quality standards

The Associate Software Tester typically performs basic testing tasks under supervision, focusing on executing test cases and reporting issues. A QA Tester often has more experience and responsibilities, including designing tests and ensuring overall quality. Both roles are essential in software development, with the Associate Software Tester serving as an entry point into the QA field.

What is an associate software tester?

Associate Software Testers are entry-level professionals responsible for evaluating software applications to ensure they meet specified requirements and are free of defects. They design and execute test cases, report bugs, and collaborate with developers to resolve issues. Their work helps improve software quality and user experience. Associate Software Testers typically work under the supervision of more experienced testers or quality assurance leads, making this role a common starting point for a career in software testing.

Are associate software testers still in demand?

Associate software testers are still in demand as companies continue to prioritize quality assurance and software testing. Skills in automation tools, scripting, and understanding of testing frameworks enhance employability in this field.

What are some typical challenges an associate software tester might face when collaborating with development teams?

Associate Software Testers often work closely with developers to identify, report, and resolve bugs. One common challenge is communicating technical issues clearly, especially when describing defects or unexpected behaviors. Additionally, balancing multiple testing tasks within tight project deadlines can be demanding. Building strong relationships with developers and learning to provide constructive feedback helps ensure smoother collaboration and more effective testing outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate software tester?

To thrive as an Associate Software Tester, you need a basic understanding of software development processes, test case design, and a relevant degree such as computer science or information technology. Familiarity with testing tools like Selenium, JIRA, and bug tracking systems, as well as knowledge of programming or scripting languages, is often required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help testers effectively identify and report issues. These skills ensure software quality, reduce defects, and support collaboration within development teams.

Job description

As the Associate Director, Technical Operations - MFG Test, you will define and execute the strategic roadmap for providing world-class manufacturing test solutions for the production of robotics systems, sub-systems and assemblies. Every day you will interact with the engineering, operations, supply chain and quality engineering teams to ensure the appropriate test coverage, test development, and product performance of our robotics systems, while managing a growing team of test engineers and technicians developing, running and improving these ongoing tests in support of production goals. To thrive in this role, you must be able to set the strategic direction of the team while also functioning as an individual contributor throughout the design and creation of test equipment, and you must be capable of understanding complex electromechanical systems and assemblies at a deep systems engineering level.

Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. For years, our awe-inspiring viral videos on YouTube have shown the world what remarkably capable robots can do. Now we are quickly becoming a recognized leader in automation solutions for industrial applications, logistics and warehouses.

Day to day activities:

  • Define and execute the strategic vision for all factory testing-including internal production, CM/ODM supplier test systems, and service/repair test platforms.

  • Lead a team of manufacturing test engineers to develop test solutions for all factory testing- internal production, CMs, ODMs, service and repairs.

  • Collaborate with R&D during new product development to ensure new product is designed for manufacturing testability

  • Collaborate with the management of product software and controls groups to develop proper software testing strategies for electromechanical assemblies and complete robotic systems

  • Ensure product line test specification is created, test points identified, test jigs/fixtures designed/procured/assembled and validated on the production line, and each activity leading to qualified tests on the line are done at the right time during product development.

  • Collaborate with the management of product software and controls groups to develop proper software testing strategies for electromechanical assemblies and complete robotic systems

  • Partner with the supply chain management team to identify flow-down requirements of testing to our supply chain partners

  • Work directly with our supply chain partners to develop, implement, troubleshoot, and fix test equipment at the supplier site

  • Coordinate with both software and quality teams to create and maintain the data backhaul of tests used for quality control

  • Create and maintain test systems documentation

  • Install, bring-up and validate new tests prior to release to production, including changes.

  • Optimize test based on quality data and test gaps

Desired skills:

  • Experience leading and growing technical teams

  • Involvement in making system level trade-offs when working with other disciplines to define the parameters of a successful test, keeping both cost and quality in mind

  • Exceptional collaborator up/down and horizontally with sister organizations, e.g. R&D or manufacturing engineering and quality

  • Previous experience working with R&D and manufacturing team members to create test plans for complex electromechanical assemblies on assembly lines, and with suppliers (both ODM and CM).

  • Proven experience in strategic development and deployment of manufacturing test frameworks (HW & SW) across the global supply chain with emphasis in the APAC region.

  • Familiarity with test sequence development using tools such as TestStand, LabVIEW and Python.

  • Ability to travel up to 20% to support supplier engagement and factory implementation.

  • 15+ years previous test experience in manufacturing, primarily in a management role.

  • BS in an engineering discipline minimum.

We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.

Boston Dynamics will never ask you to divulge your personal financial or account information as part of its recruiting
