What engineers make $500,000?

Senior software engineers, especially those in high-demand fields like machine learning, cloud computing, or with extensive experience at major tech companies, can earn $500,000 or more annually. Compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options, and requires advanced skills, certifications, and a strong track record of performance.

What is the SDET engineer's salary?

The salary for an Associate Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) typically ranges from $70,000 to $110,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. SDETs with strong programming skills and knowledge of automation tools like Selenium or JUnit tend to earn higher salaries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Software Development Engineer In Test, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Development Engineer In Test, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), software testing principles, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (like Selenium or JUnit), version control systems (such as Git), and CI/CD tools is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with development teams and identify issues efficiently. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring software quality, reducing defects, and supporting the agile development process.

Will QA or SDET get replaced by AI?

QA and SDET roles involve designing, developing, and maintaining automated testing frameworks, which require critical thinking and understanding of complex systems. While AI can assist with test automation and generate test cases, human oversight remains essential for interpreting results, handling exceptions, and ensuring software quality. Therefore, these roles are likely to evolve rather than be fully replaced by AI.

What is an Associate Software Development Engineer in Test?

An Associate Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) is an entry-level professional who designs, develops, and maintains automated tests to ensure the quality and functionality of software applications. They work closely with software developers and quality assurance teams to identify bugs, create test scripts, and automate testing processes. Their primary focus is on improving software reliability and streamlining the testing workflow by using programming skills to build robust test frameworks. This role often serves as a stepping stone to more advanced positions in quality engineering or software development.

What are some typical challenges faced by an Associate Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) when collaborating with development teams?

As an Associate SDET, one common challenge is ensuring clear communication between QA and development teams, especially when clarifying requirements or reporting bugs. SDETs often need to advocate for quality while balancing release deadlines, which requires effective collaboration and negotiation skills. Additionally, integrating automated tests into fast-paced development cycles can be complex, especially when dealing with evolving codebases or shifting priorities. Overcoming these challenges involves proactive communication, continuous learning, and adaptability within agile team structures.

Is SDET more technical than QA?

An SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test) role is typically more technical than a traditional QA role, as it involves designing and developing automated tests, writing code, and working closely with developers. QA roles often focus on manual testing, test case creation, and ensuring product quality through different testing methods. The SDET's technical skills in programming, automation tools, and software development are generally more advanced than those required for standard QA positions.

Raytheon’s Naval Power (NP) Strategic Business Unit is seeking a highly motivated Integrated Product Team Lead (IPTL) to support Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) Development Test Equipment (TE). This position involves leading a multi-disciplined engineering team, providing technical oversight and managing the development, integration and verification of new test equipment solutions that support RAM development and future production.

In this role, you will lead the design and development lifecycle of Test Equipment, including requirements definition, architecture and design reviews, hardware/software integration, verification and validation and coordination of Release‑to‑Production for new TE capabilities.

This is an on-site position located in Tucson, AZ.

What You Will Do

  • Lead a cross-functional team of 5–7 Test Equipment Engineers, including mechanical, electrical, systems and software engineers, focused on new test equipment development.

  • Define TE requirements in collaboration with Program Engineering, Systems Engineering and Product Test Engineering (PTE), ensuring alignment with RAM development needs.

  • Oversee TE architecture, design trade studies, prototype build, integration planning and technical reviews throughout the development lifecycle.

  • Manage TE integration, verification, and validation activities, ensuring readiness for system‑level testing and eventual factory deployment.

  • Coordinate with Program Management and Chief Engineering organizations to prioritize engineering tasks, manage risks and ensure technical rigor.

  • Partner with Program Responsible Engineer Authorities (REA), Product Test Engineers (PTE), Manufacturing Engineers (ME) and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to ensure TE designs meet capability, performance and manufacturability expectations.

  • Support the transition of newly developed TE into production environments, including Release‑to‑Production (RtP), training, and technical support for initial deployment.

  • Engage with suppliers for hardware/software development, design reviews, qualification activities and factory acceptance tests.

  • Manage TE development budgets and schedules, including regular performance reporting, Estimate at Completion (EAC) updates, and cost/schedule variance analysis.

  • Maintain an IPT project tracking system; hold REAs accountable for technical progress and program commitments.

  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement in TE design practices, technologies and processes supporting RAM development.

  • Identify staffing/resource needs and remove programmatic or technical barriers for the team.

  • Mentor and coach junior engineers to grow technical depth and strengthen engineering discipline within the IPT.

  • Support occasional travel for supplier engagement, development testing, and engineering reviews.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and 8 years of relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.

  • Experience in Test Equipment or Test Systems Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Software Engineering, and/or Systems Engineering.

  • Experience in test system development, including requirements, design, integration, verification, validation and/or qualification.

  • Experience with program management tools: Earned Value Management System (EVMS), Integrated Master Plan (IMP), Integrated Master Schedule (IMS), and/or risk and opportunity management.

  • Experience with budget control, schedule management, EAC process, and/or financial reporting.
