Job description

Job Title: Technical Associate - R&D (Microscopy & Materials Analysis)
Role Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented, dedicated Technical Associate - R&D to join our analytical laboratory operations on a dedicated second-shift schedule. In this role, you will work under the direction of experienced research scientists to provide critical analytical support for Research & Development (R&D), Technical Service & Development (TS&D), and manufacturing teams. You will be responsible for operating advanced microscopy equipment, preparing complex material samples, and generating high-quality analytical data.
This is a hands-on, on-site laboratory position ideal for a physical science or engineering graduate looking to build a career in high-end materials characterization. You will partner closely with first-shift operators to ensure seamless continuity across analytical workflows, maintain complex instrumentation, and adhere strictly to laboratory safety standards. If you have a solid foundation in microscopy and a passion for scientific discovery, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Sample Preparation & Microscopy Operations
โ€ข Sample Preparation: Prepare diverse materials for analysis following established protocols, utilizing mechanical polishers, plasma/sputter coaters, and precision FIB-SEM cross-section milling and lift-out techniques.
โ€ข FIB-SEM Operation: Operate a Focused-Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscope during second-shift hours to perform high-resolution imaging, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD).
โ€ข Data Assessment: Evaluate basic data quality, organize analytical outputs, and compile reports for internal R&D and manufacturing customers.
Laboratory Maintenance & Safety
โ€ข Instrument Care: Perform routine instrument maintenance and troubleshooting in accordance with established laboratory procedures.
โ€ข Waste Management: Handle and dispose of chemical and laboratory waste safely and in compliance with all environmental and institutional protocols.
โ€ข Safety Adherence: Maintain an uncompromised commitment to laboratory safety, participating in pre-job briefings and ensuring a hazard-free work environment.
Collaboration & Continuity
โ€ข Shift Coordination: Work effectively on a second-shift schedule, communicating daily progress and handing off active priorities smoothly with the first-shift operator.
โ€ข Timeline Management: Manage competing analytical priorities under tight timelines while maintaining meticulous attention to detail.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
โ€ข Education: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Engineering, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent knowledge acquired through relevant hands-on technical training).
โ€ข Work Arrangement: Must be able to work 100% on-site in a laboratory environment with no remote work options.

Schedule & Shift Details
โ€ข Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week (On-Site).
โ€ข Permanent Shift: Second Shift (approximately 4:00 PM - 12:30 AM), with some flexibility in daily start/finish times.
โ€ข Training Period: The selected candidate will train during daytime hours (approximately 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM) for the first three months of the assignment.
โ€ข Assignment Structure: Annual renewal contract position.
