Associate Quantitative Analyst information

What are some common challenges an Associate Quantitative Analyst faces when transitioning from academia to industry?

One common challenge for Associate Quantitative Analysts moving from academia to industry is adapting to the fast-paced, results-driven environment where deadlines and business impacts are prioritized over theoretical exploration. Unlike academic research, industry projects often require quick, practical solutions and effective communication with non-technical stakeholders. Additionally, analysts may need to balance multiple projects simultaneously and collaborate closely with teams such as risk management, IT, and trading desks. Developing strong project management and communication skills can help ease this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Quantitative Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Quantitative Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, advanced proficiency in mathematics and statistics, and typically a degree in a quantitative field such as mathematics, statistics, finance, or engineering. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R, experience with statistical modeling tools, and knowledge of data analysis platforms are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills help you interpret data and collaborate with team members. These skills are crucial for developing accurate models, providing actionable insights, and supporting data-driven decision-making in complex financial environments.

What does an Associate Quantitative Analyst do?

An Associate Quantitative Analyst is responsible for applying mathematical, statistical, and analytical methods to financial and risk management problems. Their tasks often include building financial models, analyzing large datasets, and supporting senior analysts or portfolio managers with data-driven insights. Associate Quantitative Analysts play a crucial role in helping organizations make data-informed decisions in areas such as trading, asset management, and risk assessment.

Through both its direct investment and fund investment strategies, the firm builds relationships with high-quality late-stage companies and leading venture capital funds. These strategies are mutually reinforcing in their goals to strengthen ties between private and public investors and to deliver above-market returns for limited partners. The firm has over $1 billion in assets under management.
Role Overview
Cross Creek is seeking a full-time Investment Analyst or Associate to support the Investment Committee in the research and diligence of new and existing venture investments.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
  • Conduct rigorous quantitative and qualitative analysis on prospective and existing investments, including evaluation of business models, growth drivers, and financial performance
  • Build and analyze financial models, assess valuation, and benchmark performance across both companies and fund managers
  • Perform market research, competitive analysis, and thematic work to inform investment decisions and identify emerging opportunities
  • Evaluate investment opportunities with a cross-portfolio perspective, including strategic fit and overlap with existing investments
  • Support all stages of the investment process, including preparation of investment materials, participation in management and fund manager meetings, and coordination of diligence efforts
  • Conduct reference calls, customer interviews, and other diligence activities to inform underwriting decisions
  • Track and maintain investment pipelines, ensuring accuracy and completeness of data across internal systems and dashboards
  • Monitor portfolio performance and industry trends
  • Develop and maintain relationships with founders, operators, investors, and other ecosystem participants
  • Attend Investment Committee discussions and summarize key insights and takeaways
Qualifications:
For Analyst candidates:

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skillset
  • Experience working in Excel and building or evaluating financial models
For Associate candidates:
  • 3 years of relevant experience in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, or related fields
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage projects or diligence workflows
  • Strong financial modeling and analytical capabilities
  • Experience evaluating investments and/or working with fund managers
General Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university (Accounting, Data Science, Mathematics, Finance, or related field preferred)
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Low ego, high ownership, team-oriented attitude
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. for at least 2 years. Cross Creek is unable to sponsor work visas at this time.
