Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics (Emory) is seeking an innovative and strategic leader to serve as the Associate Vice Chair for Faculty Development.
The Associate Vice Chair for Faculty Development is a pivotal senior leadership role. This role is accountable for appointments and promotions, nomination for national awards/committees/leadership roles, and associated mentoring. The Associate Vice Chair of Faculty Development will lead the oversight and advancement for senior appointments and promotions for all faculty within the Department of Pediatrics, including clinicians, PhD researchers, and educators. This individual will report to the Vice Chair of Faculty Development where the two roles will collaboratively foster a culture of career growth, support faculty and physicians in their career development and professionalism as well as engage in creative program development. The Associate Vice Chair of Faculty Development will be responsible for organizing and leading the effort in submissions of senior appointments (Associate Professor, Professor, and Professor Emeritus), promotions, and tenure packages for review, including leading the Department of Pediatrics Appointments and Promotions Committee. In addition, the Associate Vice Chair of Faculty Development will oversee the clinical distinctions process and award/committee nominations ensuring criteria, reviews, and recommendations align with the School of Medicine policies and support equitable recognition of all types of faculty development, recognizing the importance of our tripartite mission of clinical excellence, education, and research/discovery science. This leader will inspire and extend the Department of Pediatrics Chair/Pediatrician-in-Chief vision across Emory and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta ensuring alignment with organizational goals and promoting a culture of collaboration, belonging, and continuous improvement supporting faculty who thrive throughout their career. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in academic pediatrics, with a proven track record of leadership in faculty development and administration. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as this individual will work with the Vice Chair of Faculty Development to serve as a liaison between faculty, department leadership, medical school administration, and clinical administration when relevant, and advocating for faculty needs.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Appointments & Promotions Leadership:
- Maintain awareness of all current and future faculty promotions, appointments, and clinical distinctions within the Department.
- Lead the appointment procedures for associate professors and professors and any distinguished appointments supported through endowed chairs or other mechanisms.
- Chair the Departmental Appointments and Promotions Committee ensuring alignment with institutional standards and leading the senior promotions process
- Oversee faculty promotion and tenure processes including advisement, packet reviews, CV workshops, and preparation of promotion materials.
- Liaise with the School of Medicine's Faculty Committee on Appointments and Promotions and the Clinical Distinctions Committee
- Stay current with national and Emory promotion policies.
- Provide or facilitate mentoring tailored to promotion and tenure requirements
- Implement Process improvements related to Promotions, Appointments and Clinical Distinctions as needed.
Clinical Distinctions
- Coordinate the annual Clinical Distinctions cycle, including communication of timelines and requirements.
- Lead and Support the Department of Pediatrics Committee for Appointments and Promotions review and ensure consistent, equitable evaluation across divisions.
- Maintain accurate records of all Clinical Distinctions submissions and outcomes.
- Partner with the Vice Chair of Faculty Development to align Clinical Distinctions with faculty/physician advancement pathways.
- Serve as a resource to faculty and Division Chiefs on eligibility, criteria, and documentation. Ensure Clinical Distinctions criteria and reviews align with Emory and departmental standards.
Faculty Development
- Foster a culture of career growth for faculty and physicians, working closely with both the Emory and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta resources and teams
- Support faculty and physicians in their career development and professionalism
- Contribute to creative program development in partnership with the Vice Chair of Faculty Development.
Administrative Duties
- Maintain accurate data related to Promotions, Appointments, and Clinical Distinctions
- Partner with the Vice Chair of Faculty Development to develop streamlined data processes and adjustments to career development programs as needed within the Department.
Advice and Support to Chair of Pediatrics and Pediatrician in Chief
- Assist the Chair/PIC in fostering an environment that values and promotes faculty engagement and success by serving as a departmental advocate for investment and improvement in these efforts.
- Contribute to strategic planning, governance, and decision-making processes within the Department.
- Provide annual summaries of promotions, appointments, and clinical distinctions to the Chair/PIC
- Uphold the highest standards of confidentiality.
- Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the Chair and Pediatrician in Chief to support the department.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Foster recruitment, retention, and development of faculty.
- Conduct annual review of direct report(s)
- Be the leader voice in appropriate meetings when it pertains to matters of faculty appointments, promotion readiness and support, and clinical distinctions
- Support departmental infrastructure for faculty career development success.
Candidate Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (MD or DO) or equivalent medical degree from an accredited institution.
- Board Certification in Pediatrics or a Pediatric Subspecialty.
- Eligible for medical licensure in the state of Georgia.
- Meet eligibility requirements for credentialing as part of Children's professional staff.
- An advanced degree in Medical Education, Business, Health Administration, Public Health and/or PhD is preferred but not required.
- Eligible for an appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor at the Emory University School of Medicine
Experience and Skills
- Five (5) or more years of extensive experience in faculty/physician professional development.
- Proven track record of leadership in an academic setting, preferably within a medical or pediatric department. Experience in managing or leading faculty development programs and initiatives.
- Strong knowledge of School of Medicine faculty appointments, promotions, and tenure processes.
- Demonstrated success in faculty development, mentorship, and fostering academic excellence.
- Ability to lead and manage change initiatives, fostering an environment that embraces innovation and adaptability.
- An experienced academic and operational leader with vision, enthusiasm, and developing executive presence.
- Experience building and maintaining partnerships between academic and clinical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to accurately implement and follow institutional policies and procedures set by Emory and Children's
