Understanding these distinctions helps clarify career progression in academia.

Yes, most academic institutions require an associate professor to hold a doctoral degree, such as a PhD, along with significant research, teaching experience, and a strong publication record. Some institutions may consider candidates with equivalent qualifications or professional experience in certain fields. A PhD is generally essential for career advancement in academia at this level.

How long does it take for an associate professor to become a professor?

Typically, an associate professor advances to full professor after 5 to 7 years of successful teaching, research, and service, though this timeline can vary by institution and discipline.
