As an associate product manager, your job duties are to conduct market research, generate product plans, and check for product issues. Other qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, management, or a related field and previous experience in your industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Product Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Product Manager, you need a solid understanding of product development, market research, and data analysis, often supported by a degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Trello, SQL, and analytics platforms—as well as Agile methodologies—is typically expected. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and cross-functional collaboration skills help you stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for successfully guiding product features from conception to launch and ensuring alignment with customer needs and business objectives.

How does an Associate Product Manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a product launch?

As an Associate Product Manager (APM), you'll work closely with engineering, design, marketing, and sales teams, especially during product launches. Your role often involves gathering requirements, aligning stakeholders, and ensuring everyone is informed about timelines and deliverables. You may facilitate meetings, clarify the product vision, and help resolve any blockers that arise. This collaborative environment helps you develop strong communication and problem-solving skills while providing exposure to multiple facets of the product development process.

What is an Associate Product Manager?

Job Description:

Summary:

At ITW, innovation starts with people who think like owners. We give our teams the freedom to experiment, the tools to succeed, and the responsibility to make an impact. As Senior Product Manager for our Celeste transportation chemicals product segment – you’ll be at the center of building and growing a brand trusted by commercial airlines and railways.

The ideal candidate brings experience working within technical, specification-driven industries (e.g., aerospace or similar), and is comfortable navigating long sales cycles, complex B2B environments, and cross-functional collaboration with engineering and technical teams.

What You'll Do:
  • Effectively and regularly communicate with customers, sellers, technical service, research and development, and others to understand customer needs and product requirements (voice of the customer).
  • Perform market research, competitive analysis and business data reporting (unit volumes, revenues, margin) to understand business trends and make informed decisions for current and future product direction.
  • Define and communicate product strategy, roadmaps, and value propositions aligned with customer needs, business priorities, and brand objectives across key segments and channels in a highly fragmented market.
  • Lead cross‑functional collaboration through all stages of product innovation and lifecycle management to deliver differentiated solutions that meet time‑to‑market, financial, regulatory, and performance expectations.
  • Own portfolio, pricing, and assortment strategy, including omnichannel and eCommerce considerations, to drive profitable growth and optimize distribution, promotion, and merchandising effectiveness.
  • Partner with Marketing Communications and Sales to develop and execute go‑to‑market plans, messaging, sales tools, training, and digital content (including web and PDPs) that clearly articulate product value.
  • Drive data‑driven business and financial management, translating insights into actionable recommendations and leading initiatives that positively impact revenue, margin, and overall P&L performance.
  • Collaborate broadly across Sales, Operations, R&D, Regulatory, Finance, IT, and other functions to ensure alignment, strong execution, and sustained business results.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop Assistant and Associate Product Managers, supporting onboarding, capability building, and a high‑performance team culture.
  • Apply and model ITW’s business model in all aspects of product management and decision‑making to improve organizational effectiveness and efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA preferred.
  • 7–10 years of progressive brand and/or product marketing or product management experience in a manufacturing or other technically complex B2B or B2C environment, with demonstrated ability to understand, position, and commercialize products used in professional or industrial applications.
  • Proven experience owning product strategy and driving business growth, including new & derivative product innovation, launches, portfolio management, and pricing strategy.
  • Strong strategic, analytical, and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to translate customer and market insights into clear, actionable product and business decisions; experienced in leveraging POS and shipment data tools such as Circana, NPD, or comparable platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to influence and collaborate effectively across cross‑functional and highly matrixed teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results through strong project management skills and informal leadership; prior people‑management or mentoring experience preferred.
  • Experience with value‑based selling, application of the 80/20 business principle, and customer‑back innovation processes, including leading and training voice‑of‑the‑customer activities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and experience using ERP and CRM systems.

Other Competencies:

  • Strong financial and analytical acumen, with the ability to drive product and portfolio performance toward bottom-line results.
  • Entrepreneurial, opportunity‑oriented mindset with the ability to focus teams on the highest‑impact initiatives.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and business problem‑solving capability.
  • Highly collaborative, with a proven ability to influence and work effectively across diverse, cross‑functional teams.
  • Ownership mentality with a track record of driving alignment, accountability, and positive change.
  • Enterprise‑first perspective, balancing individual product priorities with broader organizational objectives.
  • Strong communication and listening skills, with the ability to synthesize complex inputs and translate them into clear strategic direction.
  • Adaptable and effective in dynamic environments, with strong prioritization and time‑management capability.

Work Environment:

  • Able to maintain a valid U.S. Passport, if traveling internationally.
  • Able to work in an environment where there may be exposure to heat, cold, or controlled chemicals.
  • Responsible for workspace and any assigned company property, equipment, or materials.

Why You'll Love Working Here:

At ITW, you’ll experience the best of both worlds: the autonomy of an entrepreneur with the resources of a Fortune 200 company. Our decentralized culture means your ideas matter, your ownership is real, and your impact is visible.
