Why is Gen Z struggling to get jobs?

Gen Z faces challenges in securing jobs like associate operator roles due to limited work experience, high competition, and evolving skill requirements such as familiarity with automation and safety protocols. Many employers also prioritize candidates with certifications or technical skills relevant to manufacturing and industrial environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Operator, you need a solid understanding of production processes, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with industry-specific machinery, safety protocols, and basic computer systems is typically required. Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities help individuals excel in monitoring operations and addressing issues quickly. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining efficient production, ensuring safety, and contributing to overall operational success.

What are Associate Operators?

Associate Operators are entry-level professionals responsible for supporting the daily operations of a facility, such as a manufacturing plant, warehouse, or control room. Their duties typically include monitoring equipment, performing basic maintenance, following safety protocols, and ensuring production processes run smoothly. They often work under the supervision of more experienced operators and may assist with troubleshooting issues or reporting problems. This role is a key starting point for those looking to build a career in operations or production environments.

What are some typical challenges an Associate Operator might encounter during daily operations?

As an Associate Operator, common challenges include quickly troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, adapting to unexpected changes in production schedules, and maintaining high attention to detail during repetitive tasks. You may also need to coordinate with maintenance and quality assurance teams to ensure safety and compliance standards are met. Effective communication and a proactive approach to problem-solving are essential for handling these challenges efficiently.

Position Summary:
The CNC Operator runs the machining centers in crankcase manufacturing, machining crankcases to exact specifications with in-process quality assurance. The role offers a clear development path. It starts with line boring as the entry point, which needs no prior CNC experience, and grows into CNC machining on the Burkhardt & Weber (B&W) machines, with responsibility and pay increasing as operators progress.
With this attractive opportunity you will get a chance to:
  • Set up and machine crankcases according to specifications, routings, control plans, and drawings, on the line boring machine and, at the advanced level, on the Burkhardt & Weber (B&W) machining centers with Sinumerik One control system
  • Bore and align the bearing alleys of the crankcase, including the camshaft and crankshaft bores, re-boring as required to achieve precise alignment
  • Clamp, reclamp, and unclamp crankcases, monitor the process, and correct as necessary
  • Monitor, change, correct, and adjust tools as required
  • Study machining instructions, routings, control plans, job orders, and blueprints to determine dimensional and finish specifications, sequences of operations, machine setups, and tooling requirements
  • Select the appropriate tools and materials for the preparation of crankcase components
  • Set up, adjust, and operate the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations
  • Perform fine-tuning through sample cuts and optimize the CNC program with regard to tool durability, collision prevention, and program sequencing
  • Observe machine operation to detect conditions such as dull cutting tools or excessive vibration and adjust to compensate

Position Requirements
  • Entry level, line boring: Completed vocational training as a machine and plant operator or a comparable qualification, or a U.S. equivalent such as a mechanical or machining trade school certificate, an Associate's Degree, or relevant hands-on experience in a machining environment
  • Direct work as CNC Operator on the B&W machines: Completed vocational training as an industrial mechanic specializing in production technology, or a comparable 3.5-year apprenticeship in a metalworking profession, or 2 years of trade school or an equivalent Associate's Degree, or 3 years of experience in a heavy-duty machining environment; several years of experience operating NC-controlled machining centers; and knowledge of Sinumerik One control system
  • Shift: (Full Time) Working Shift - 1st Shift - Monday through Thursday, 5:45am to 4:15pm.
  • All levels: Strong quality awareness and a high sense of responsibility; physically resilient, reliable, and committed; willingness to work shifts and occasional weekends; and the ability to work overtime as needed
  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without sponsorship. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time

  • Knowledge of Sinumerik One control system would be particularly advantageous
  • Several years of experience on a conventional boring mill (e.g., Collet) would be an advantage
  • Experience machining crankcases or large cast components
  • Intermediate knowledge of CNC controls, machines, and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Intermediate knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications
  • Basic ability to interpret Statistical Process Control (SPC) and operate scanning devices for system communications
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing and production processes, raw materials, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture of goods (Quality Alerts, Second Checks, etc.)
