Job description

Your Next Opportunity

Would you like to be a part of Canadaโ€™s leading and progressive Business Law firm?

McMillan is looking for a Writer to join our Toronto office on a 19- to 20-month contract. This is a specialist-level role sitting within the Marketing, Brand & Communications team, supporting both client-facing communications and internal firm communications under the leadership of the Associate Director, Communications.

The Writer will be a skilled communicator who understands how to translate ideas into clear, compelling content for diverse audiences โ€” from clients and prospects to lawyers, business professionals, firm alumni and recruits. They will bring editorial judgment, an understanding of audience and tone, and the ability to use approved AI tools thoughtfully to support research, drafting and editing while maintaining accuracy, quality and McMillanโ€™s voice. They will also be able to work effectively across a fast-moving professional services environment.

What Youโ€™ll Do

External Communications

The majority of your focus will be devoted to external-facing content. You will produce writing that reflects a strong understanding of the firm's business, clients and markets โ€” content that is client-centric, commercially aware, succinct and engaging. Specifically, you will:

  • Write and edit client-facing materials including practice and industry updates, client alerts, award and recognition submissions, event communications and stakeholder updates, adapting tone and structure to suit different audiences and channels.
  • Draft compelling content and campaign materials in partnership with the business development, digital and social media teams.
  • Prepare supporting materials such as communications plans, message maps, briefing notes and web copy for firm initiatives and external opportunities.
  • Collaborate with creative services, social media, digital, business development and operations colleagues to deliver accurate, brand-aligned communications on time.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the firm's markets, clients and competitive positioning, ensuring external content reflects that context.

Internal Communications

In this role, you will also support a focused and well-coordinated internal communications function, helping ensure firmwide information is shared clearly, consistently and on a timely basis. This will include:

  • Developing communications related to firmwide initiatives, lawyer and practice recognition, culture and engagement activities, office and policy updates and operational priorities.
  • Writing and supporting the coordination of a national internal newsletter that enables all teams to share information broadly and consistently across offices.
  • Contributing to a shared communications calendar that tracks upcoming events, significant announcements and key internal milestones.ย

Editorial and Workflow Support

  • Work with internal stakeholders to gather information and confirm objectives, audiences, key messages, timing, approvals and distribution channels.
  • Review and edit materials for clarity, tone, grammar, structure, accuracy, accessibility and alignment with McMillan's voice and standards.
  • Use Microsoft Office Suite/Office 365, communications calendars, internal email tools, analytics, content management systems and approved AI tools to support drafting, editing, research and content development workflows.
  • Track engagement, feedback and recurring communications needs to inform reporting and continuous improvement.

What You Bring

  • Post-secondary education in communications, journalism, English, or a related field, with five to eight years of experience in corporate, internal, external or employee communications.
  • Experience working in a law firm or other professional services environment is an asset, as is working knowledge of French.
  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills, with the ability to adjust tone, structure and level of detail for different audiences.
  • Extensive experience writing for corporate channels such as email news, leadership communications, intranets, websites, newsletters, announcements and stakeholder updates.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce client-centric, commercially grounded external communications โ€” writing that is clear, engaging and reflective of the business context.
  • Good judgment, discretion and professionalism when working with confidential, sensitive or time-sensitive information.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, requests and deadlines.
