What is an associate laboratory director?

Associate Laboratory Directors are senior management professionals in research or clinical laboratories who assist the Laboratory Director in overseeing laboratory operations. They help manage staff, ensure compliance with regulations, develop and implement policies, and may coordinate research projects or quality assurance programs. Their role is essential in maintaining smooth laboratory workflows, ensuring safety standards, and supporting the overall mission of the laboratory. Associate Laboratory Directors often serve as liaisons between laboratory staff and upper administration.

What are some common challenges faced by an associate laboratory director when managing multiple research projects simultaneously?

Associate Laboratory Directors often oversee several ongoing research projects, which can present challenges such as balancing resource allocation, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards, and maintaining clear communication among diverse research teams. Prioritizing tasks and delegating responsibilities effectively are essential to keep projects on track and meet deadlines. Successful Associate Laboratory Directors foster a collaborative environment, utilize project management tools, and stay updated on regulatory requirements to address these challenges efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate laboratory director, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Laboratory Director, you need advanced scientific expertise, strong leadership abilities, and typically a doctoral degree in a relevant field, along with applicable certifications such as CLIA qualification. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), quality control protocols, and regulatory compliance tools is essential. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and team management skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring laboratory accuracy, regulatory compliance, and effective team operations in a high-stakes scientific environment.

Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM), seeks an innovative and strategic Division Director to lead the Advanced Technology and Analysis Division within the Global Security Directorate (GSD). The GSD plays a vital role in supporting National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Defense Programs, the Department of Defense/Department of War, Department of Homeland Security, and other DOE and government agencies.
The Division Director collaborates closely with the Associate Laboratory Director to guide science and technology programs, set a clear vision, and implement strategic plans. GSD is looking for people who can use their talents and experience to build state-of-the-art business programs as SRNL continues to use its diverse creative staff to deliver the highest quality programs to its customers.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct line management responsibilities within the Global Security Directorate.
  • Promote a culture of scientific excellence, by maintaining a routine physical presence, while performing work in a safe and secure manner to ensure all division work is planned and executed safely and in full compliance with environmental, safety, health, quality, and security requirements.
  • Proactively promote principles of stewardship, and accessibility and ensure the division has the capabilities, tools, talent, and partnerships needed to execute its missions effectively and on time.
  • Manage the division's budget, financial performance, facilities, and capital and infrastructure needs, leading the formulation of long-term, mission-critical plans to sustain and grow division capabilities. Ensure delivery of high-quality products on scope, on schedule, and within budget.
  • Contribute as a key member of the GSD Senior Leadership Team to the formulation and execution of GSD's strategic priorities, initiatives and programmatic growth.

  • Develop and execute strategic workforce and succession plans that align directly with the Lab Agenda, core competencies, and overall division goals
  • Promote science education and work to build a pipeline of next generation researchers through outreach and education programs with other national laboratories and learning institutions.
  • Advance SRNL's standing and visibility in the division's technical domains through appropriate publications, presentations, professional leadership, and strategic external relationships.
  • Foster employee development through mentoring, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Act as primary Division contact, representing the Division on Lab-Level committees, task forces, and working groups with a shared responsibility for the overall lab-wide science and technology strategy.
  • Integrate and implement commercialization activities through the Laboratory's business plan and strategies.
  • Develop communications strategies across the directorate on multi-disciplinary programs and initiatives.
  • Effectively communicate relevant information to key internal and external stakeholders.
