Associate, Investment Banking, Mining & Metals - Toronto, ON

Global Banking and Markets

Global Banking and Markets (GBM) conducts the Bank's wholesale banking and capital markets business with corporate, government and institutional investor clients. GBM is a full-service wholesale bank and investment dealer in Canada and Mexico and offers a range of products and services in the U.S., Latin America and in select markets inย Europe and Asia-Pacific.

More specifically, GBM provides clients with: corporate lending; transaction banking (including payments, trade finance and cash management); investment banking (including corporate finance and mergers & acquisitions); fixed income and equity underwriting, sales, trading and research; prime services (prime brokerage and stock lending); foreign exchange sales and trading; commodity derivatives; and collateral management.

Position Highlights

Associates in Investment Banking enjoy a stimulating and challenging work environment in which they execute a broad range of transactions.ย  A high degree of responsibility is afforded to those demonstrating initiative and the desire to take on such responsibility.

At the early stages of their career, Associates focus on client presentations, financial modeling, and research. As the individual's career progresses, Associates take on increased responsibilities on live transactions and participate in business development under the guidance of senior group members. Scotiabank brings Associates in contact with senior team members and clients at the earliest possible stage, allowing them to gain experience in managing and cultivating relationships.

A significant amount of effort, diligence and initiative is required to properly execute assignments.ย  The complexity of clients' financial requirements coupled with the intense competitiveness of the investment banking industry necessitates a full commitment to the task at hand.ย  Standards are very high as most work is presented to senior executives at client firms and supervision is provided only to the extent that it is required.

With a limited hierarchy of professionals and a small project team approach, Associates have ample opportunity for career growth and development.ย  On any given project, you will interact with other departments of the firm such as Corporate Banking, Equity Capital Markets, Global Fixed Income and Global Equity Derivatives gaining knowledge and understanding of both investment banking and the capital markets.

What You'll Do:

  • Evaluate and analyze the financial and strategic needs of corporate clients
  • Collect, consolidate, interpret and present company and industry data
  • Perform comprehensive financial statement analysis including creating and maintaining financial models
  • Support transaction structuring and execution efforts, with increasing levels of responsibility and accountability over time
  • Identify and develop business opportunities with clients
  • Prepare client presentations, including compiling data and assembling presentation materials
  • Support drafting of prospectuses, related documentation and marketing materials for transactions
  • Apply product and capital markets knowledge to help clients achieve their objectives

What You'll Bring:

  • 2 to 4 years of capital markets, accounting or financial valuation work experience
    • Experience in Investment Banking or M&A is preferred
    • Natural resources' experience an asset
  • A Bachelors or Master's degree in business, finance, math, engineering, economics, science or technology would be preferred
  • Strong quantitative skills focused on financial analysis, accounting and financial theory
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent command of Microsoft Suite, with an emphasis on Excel
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining a high standard of work
  • The ability to excel under pressure amid demanding deadlines and perform effectively in a team environment and quickly adapt to new situations
  • High professional standards including a strong sense of personal integrity and teamwork
  • A high level of energy and a keen desire to learn new concepts
  • Independent thinker and proven ability to make decisions
