Job description

POSITION TITLE: Assistant/Associate Professor of Religion (Religious Studies Program) 


The instructor is responsible for planning, preparing, delivering, and evaluating asynchronous and synchronous instruction and related activities within the Master of Arts in Religious Studies program. In addition, the instructor performs other duties as directed by the Dean of the Division of Professional Studies or Academic Affairs. The appointment is a full-time tenure-track position for nine months. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. D.Min. or Ph.D. in Theology, Religion, Apologetics, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution  
  2. Ability to use instructional technology, including Learning Management Systems (LMS) and virtual meeting platforms  
  3. Experience or training in asynchronous and synchronous online instruction  
  4. Demonstrated record of teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate and/or graduate level  
  5. Evidence of scholarly engagement (publications, conference presentations, or active research agenda)  
  6. Strong grounding in Christian theology, Religious Studies, and Apologetics   
  7. Experience in ministry, preaching, or church leadership preferred  
  8. Familiarity with the Black Church tradition and HBCU context preferred  
  9. Quality Matters or equivalent online teaching certification preferred  

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Teach assigned graduate courses in Theology, Religious Studies, and Apologetics as specified in the schedule and course contract  
  2. Prepare course materials as needed, including revising and developing curriculum for the Religious Studies program  
  3. Provide students with syllabi that delineate course objectives, learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies, textbooks, reading assignments, timelines, evaluation criteria, and other deliverables  
  4. Use the University learning management system to post syllabi, assignments, and instructional materials and to communicate effectively with students  
  5. Deliver course content using a variety of engaging, Christ-centered teaching methods that demonstrate real-world ministry and apologetic application  
  6. Observe and evaluate students’ academic performance and provide timely, constructive feedback  
  7. Maintain virtual office hours and consult with students via online platforms, phone, and email, with the expectation of responding within two business days  
  8. Maintain accurate records of enrollment, attendance, assessments, and grades; submit class rosters and final grades by University deadlines  
  9. Encourage student participation in course evaluations, review feedback, and implement improvements to course delivery  
  10. Revise and update course content as requested to reflect current theological scholarship and ministry practice  
  11. Provide the Dean or Program Director with updates on course progress and student engagement  
  12. Assist in program assessment, accreditation processes, and data collection for continuous improvement  
  13. Advise and mentor graduate students academically, spiritually, and professionally, including supervision of theses or capstone projects

 Demonstrated respect for students and a genuine commitment to their spiritual and academic growth 
 Strong written and oral communication skills 
 Strong organizational skills and timeliness in responding to student inquiries 
 Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with students, faculty, and staff
