To thrive as an Associate Full Stack Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, or Java), web development frameworks, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and databases (SQL and NoSQL), as well as exposure to tools like Docker or CI/CD pipelines, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability help you collaborate and learn quickly in dynamic environments. These skills and qualities ensure you can build, maintain, and improve scalable software solutions while contributing productively to team goals.

What is the difference between Associate Full Stack Software Engineer vs Junior Full Stack Developer?

The Associate Full Stack Software Engineer role generally requires a bachelor's degree and some experience, focusing on collaboration and learning. In contrast, a Junior Full Stack Developer is an entry-level position mainly centered on coding and skill development. Both roles are common in tech industries, but the associate position often involves more responsibilities and team interaction.

Associate Full Stack Software Engineers work closely with both front-end and back-end developers, as well as designers, QA testers, and product managers. Collaboration usually involves participating in daily stand-up meetings, code reviews, and sprint planning sessions. Associates are often given specific tasks or features to develop, but they also contribute to troubleshooting and integrating components with the larger codebase. Open communication and a willingness to ask questions are key to success, as these engineers frequently seek guidance from senior teammates while building their technical skills.

What is an associate full stack software engineer?

An Associate Full Stack Software Engineer is an entry-level or early-career professional who develops both front-end (client-side) and back-end (server-side) components of web or software applications. They work under the guidance of senior engineers to build, test, and maintain software systems, using a range of programming languages and frameworks. Their responsibilities typically include coding, debugging, collaborating with team members, and learning new technologies. This role provides foundational experience in the software development lifecycle and helps prepare individuals for more advanced engineering roles.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities
We are looking for a full-stack software engineer to build and extend an offline, edge AI data-triage application through a rapid prototype and its redeployment as mission needs evolve. The application runs entirely on a single, standalone device with no network connection. Technical tasks include:
  • TS/SCI with polygraph
  • Building and extending the offline, standalone application (Python/Flask) that ingests documents, images, audio, and video and runs locally hosted AI models to translate, summarize, extract entities, and catalog content
  • Developing the browser-based local user interface: ingest dashboard, tag filters, search, and a natural-language question interface
  • Integrating and operating on-device AI/ML components, including local open-weight language models, retrieval-augmented generation, a vector store and embeddings, speech transcription, and multimodal vision models
  • Building the controlled sandbox and data-security features: malware scanning and rule-based detection, file-type allow-listing, a quarantine landing zone, unprivileged containers with read-only mounts, and ephemeral teardown on shutdown
  • Packaging the application for standalone, offline installation on a zero-trust Linux laptop baseline, including single-package and side-load delivery across enclave boundaries
  • Maintaining a self-hosted CI/CD pipeline and cutting versioned releases that record model and behavior changes
  • Validating near-real-time processing against edge data loads from 128 GB to 1 TB across text, image, audio, and video
  • Supporting redeployment and iteration of the capability after the prototype as requirements change

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Front-end web development with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS for browser-based interfaces
  • Strong Python, including backend web development (Flask or equivalent)
  • Containerization with Docker and comfort working on Linux (Rocky Linux or the RHEL family)
  • Experience integrating AI/ML or large language model components into applications
  • Experience with data workflows using relational databases and/or vector stores

Desired Qualifications:
  • Local or offline LLM tooling (e.g., Ollama) and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)
  • Vector databases (e.g., ChromaDB) and sentence embeddings (e.g., all-MiniLM)
  • Speech-to-text (Whisper / faster-whisper) and multimodal vision models
  • Text extraction (Apache Tika) and metadata standards (Dublin Core)
  • Application security and sandboxing: ClamAV, YARA, unprivileged containers, encryption, role-based access control
  • Self-hosted CI/CD and Git for source control
  • Building for air-gapped, disconnected, or edge environments and standalone portable devices

What you can expect from us
  • The expected salary range within the Washington, DC metropolitan area is: $165,000 - 195,000. Final compensation is unique to each individual and will be determined based on factors such as experience, education, geographic location, and contractual requirements. This is not a guarantee.
  • Benefits include Health/Dental/Vision, 401(k), Paid Time Off, STD/LTD/Life Insurance/Voluntary Life Insurance, Stipends, Referral Bonuses, and more.
