The Associate Financial Planner typically supports senior planners, focusing on research and client prep, often with CFP® coursework. Financial Advisors directly manage client portfolios, provide financial advice, and hold relevant certifications like CFP® and securities licenses. While both roles work within the financial planning industry, the Associate Financial Planner is an entry-level support position, whereas the Financial Advisor is a client-facing role with greater responsibility.

What does an Associate Financial Planner do?

An Associate Financial Planner supports senior financial planners in creating and implementing financial plans for clients. Their duties typically include gathering and analyzing client financial data, preparing reports, assisting with investment recommendations, and maintaining client records. They also help answer client questions and ensure that all compliance and regulatory requirements are met. This entry-level role is ideal for those starting a career in financial planning and often serves as a stepping stone to becoming a lead financial advisor.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Financial Planner, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Financial Planner, you need a solid grounding in finance, investment principles, and financial planning concepts, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in finance or a related field. Familiarity with financial planning software (such as eMoney or MoneyGuidePro), CRM systems, and progress toward certifications like CFP® is highly valued. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding candidates apart. These skills ensure accurate advice, client trust, and successful collaboration within a financial planning team.

What Is the Job Description of an Associate Financial Planner?

The job duties of an associate financial planner revolve around working to assist and support a more senior financial planner as they offer advice to clients. Your responsibilities in this career may include providing analysis about financial options, using data to make projections, helping the advisor or planner prepare for clients, meeting with clients to get their initial information, and assisting with recommendations. You may need to deal with subjects such as investment portfolio management or retirement planning. You may also perform office administration tasks such as filing paperwork and scheduling appointments.

How does an Associate Financial Planner typically collaborate with senior advisors and clients?

Associate Financial Planners often work closely with senior advisors by supporting the development of financial plans, conducting research, and preparing client reports. They may participate in client meetings, take notes, and help implement recommendations under the supervision of a lead planner. This collaboration allows associates to gain valuable mentorship, deepen their understanding of client needs, and build strong communication skills essential for career advancement in financial planning.

Job description

At Raymond James, we develop, we collaborate, we decide, we deliver, and we improve together.

Raymond James Ltd. is Canada's leading independent investment dealers offering high quality investment products and services to Canadians seeking customized solutions to their wealth management needs.

Financial Planner

How does the role impact the organization?

If you love helping people make sense of their money (without selling them stuff they don't need), this might be your role.

We're looking for a Financial Planner who thrives on building thoughtful, goals-based financial plans for an existing client base. You'll work closely with our Financial Advisors to help clients plan for retirement, optimize taxes, and make confident long-term decisions - no prospecting required.

As part of our wealth management team, you'll deliver endtoend financial planning and collaborate with specialists in tax, insurance, estate, trust, and investments. At the end of the day, it's simple: we take great care of our clients - and each other.

What You'll Do

Client Planning & Advice

  • Create clear, customized financial plans tailored to each client's goals
  • Lead discovery conversations (you're naturally curious and a great listener)
  • Build projections, cash flow analyses, retirement scenarios, and concise summaries
  • Present plans in a way clients actually understand and feel confident about
  • Provide ongoing updates as clients' lives (and goals) evolve

Integrated Wealth Management

  • Bring together tax, retirement, investment, estate, cash management, and insurance planning
  • Identify smart opportunities around CPP/OAS, RRIF conversions, tax efficiency, and corporate planning
  • Collaborate closely with internal specialists across tax, insurance, trust, estate, and philanthropy
  • Help coordinate followups so advice turns into action

Relationships & Business Growth

  • Build trusted, longterm relationships with clients and Financial Advisors
  • Champion the value of financial planning across the branch
  • Spot opportunities to deepen relationships and support organic business growth
  • Connect with external professionals when needed

Professional Practice & Leadership

  • Maintain high ethical standards, confidentiality, and service excellence
  • Stay current on planning trends, tax changes, and regulatory updates
  • Be the goto planning resource within the branch
  • Participate in client events, workshops, and education sessions (when needed)
  • Contribute to a collaborative, supportive, and continuously improving team

What can you expect from us?

Our most important investment is in people.  Upon eligibility, Raymond James Ltd offers flexible workstyles, a competitive compensation and benefits package. Our benefits range from Health Benefits, RRSP Matching Program, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, Paid Time Off, Volunteer Days, Discretionary Bonuses, Tuition Reimbursement and many more! We also support internal promotion and community involvement.

What You Bring

Required

  • CFP designation
  • At least 1 year of hands-on financial planning experience
  • Strong knowledge of retirement, tax, estate, and cash flow planning
  • Confidence presenting and explaining complex ideas clearly
  • Ability to work independently while being a great team player
  • Strong organization, judgment, and timemanagement skills
  • A sense of humour (important - seriously)

Nice to Have

  • Experience with financial planning software (e.g., Conquest)
  • Exposure to corporate planning and trusts
  • Prior experience supporting advisors with financial planning strategies

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary plus performancebased incentives
  • Comprehensive health and wellness benefits
  • Retirement savings programs with company contributions
  • Tuition reimbursement and support for ongoing professional development
  • A collaborative, peoplefirst culture with real opportunities to grow your career

We encourage our associates at all levels to:

  • Grow professionally and inspire others to do the same
  • Work with and through others to achieve desired outcomes
  • Make prompt, pragmatic choices and act with the client in mind
  • Take ownership and hold themselves and others accountable for delivering results that matter
  • Contribute to the continuous evolution of the firm

Salary Range: $75,000-90,000 annually, in addition to competitive performance bonuses/incentives.

Actual compensation will be determined based on skills, experience, internal equity, and other job requirements.
This posting is for an existing vacancy.
