What is an associate degree?

Associate degrees are undergraduate academic programs that typically take about two years to complete at a community college, technical school, or some universities. They provide foundational knowledge and skills in a specific field, preparing students for entry-level jobs or further education. Many students use an associate degree as a stepping stone to a bachelor's degree, while others enter the workforce directly after graduation. Common types include Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS), and Associate of Applied Science (AAS).

What entry-level roles are available to someone with an associate degree, and how can they advance?

Graduates with an associate degree often find entry-level opportunities in fields such as healthcare (e.g., medical assistant, radiologic technologist), information technology (e.g., support specialist), business administration, and skilled trades. To position themselves for advancement, candidates should gain hands-on experience, seek industry certifications, and actively participate in professional development opportunities. Networking with colleagues, seeking mentorship, and demonstrating a strong work ethic can also help associate degree holders move into supervisory or specialized roles over time.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive with an associate degree?

To thrive with an Associate Degree, you need foundational knowledge in your chosen field, practical problem-solving abilities, and the credential itself. Familiarity with industry-specific software, technical tools, or certifications—such as Microsoft Office for business or CompTIA A+ for IT—can enhance your qualifications. Strong communication, teamwork, and time management skills help you stand out and adapt to diverse workplace environments. These competencies are essential to demonstrate readiness for entry-level roles, support career advancement, and contribute effectively to organizational goals.

Job description

Program Director - Surgical Technologist (CST) - Associate Degree Program

Shape the Next Generation of Surgical Techs – Without Leaving the Surgical Technology Field.

Your Next Case: Leading the Future of Surgical Technology Education

Pima Medical Institute – Seattle, WA

Program Director: Surgical Technology

If you are a Certified Surgical Technologist, you know that your impact reaches far beyond any single procedure. But what if you could multiply that impact—not by working more shifts, but by shaping the skills, minds, and careers of every Surgical Tech who follows?

Pima Medical Institute is seeking a Program Director who is ready to transition from clinical expert to academic leader. This is not about leaving your specialty behind; it is about expanding your influence. You will remain deeply engaged in the Surgical Technology field while stepping into a role that demands your clinical wisdom, your leadership presence, and your vision for what education can be.

Why This Role Is Different

This is leadership with an educator's heart. You won't manage spreadsheets—you'll mentor faculty, shape curriculum, and translate your OR expertise into graduates who don't just pass the board exam but excel in it. As the bridge between clinical practice and academic standards, you'll own our students' success and keep our program at the forefront of Washington State's healthcare community.

Your Mission
  • Lead with Vision: Develop curriculum, guide faculty, and ensure graduates are board-ready and OR-ready.
  • Champion Accreditation: Own CAAHEP/ABHES compliance and set the regional standard for excellence.
  • Mentor the Mentors: Foster a culture of continuous improvement and instructional innovation.
  • Drive Student Success: Engage directly with students—retain them, troubleshoot issues, and coach them toward confident, skilled careers.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from a USDE-recognized, accredited institution.
  • Graduate of a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program (or recognized military training equivalent).
  • Active Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential through an NCCA-accredited national certification program.
  • Current license, registration, or certification as required by local, state, or federal law.
  • 3+ years of operating room experience in the scrub role within the last 5 years.
  • OR 3+ years of teaching experience in the field of Surgical Technology.
  • Evidence of continued education and training in Education Methods, Surgical Technology standards, and credentialing and administration.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and general computer literacy.
