What types of entry-level positions can I pursue with an associate degree in finance, and how do these roles typically support career advancement?

With an Associate Degree in Finance, you can qualify for entry-level roles such as bank teller, financial clerk, loan processor, or accounting assistant. These positions often involve tasks like handling transactions, supporting financial record-keeping, or assisting with loan applications. They provide foundational experience and exposure to financial processes, which is valuable for developing industry knowledge and skills. Many employers offer on-the-job training and may sponsor further education, making these roles excellent starting points for advancing into higher positions such as financial analyst or loan officer with additional experience or education.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive with an associate degree in finance, and why are they important?

To thrive with an Associate Degree in Finance, you need a solid grasp of accounting principles, financial analysis, and business mathematics acquired through your coursework. Familiarity with financial software like QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, and basic enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are key soft skills that set candidates apart in finance roles. These competencies ensure accuracy, support sound financial decision-making, and help facilitate collaboration in finance-driven environments.

Is a finance associate a good job?

A finance associate role involves supporting financial analysis, reporting, and data management, often requiring skills in Excel and financial software. It can be a good entry-level position with opportunities for career advancement in finance or accounting fields.

Is an associate degree in finance worth it?

An associate degree in finance can provide foundational knowledge of financial principles, accounting, and investment analysis, which can help qualify for entry-level finance roles such as financial clerk or loan officer. However, career advancement and higher salaries often require additional experience or further education like a bachelor's degree. The degree is generally considered a cost-effective way to enter the finance field and develop relevant skills such as Excel and financial analysis tools.

  • Learn and apply principles of GAAP, gaming compliance, and financial policies specific to the gaming industry.

What It Takes to Shine
You're a curious, analytical, and values-driven professional eager to grow into an executive finance role. You bring strong problem-solving abilities, an interest in financial strategy, and the interpersonal skills to collaborate across departments. You're motivated by both learning and contributing - and ready to invest in building a long-term career at Grand Casino.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this developmental role means:
  • Growing steadily in financial knowledge, insight, and capability.
  • Becoming a trusted contributor to financial planning, analysis, and strategy.
  • Demonstrating leadership behaviors aligned with Mille Lacs Band values and Grand Casino's culture.
  • Progressing toward readiness for an executive-level Finance role with increasing autonomy and strategic influence.

What You'll Get
Growth + Support
  • Structured development plan designed for progression toward VP-level responsibilities.
  • Direct mentorship from the VP of Finance and access to senior leaders.
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits (medical, dental, vision).
  • 401(k) with employer match, tuition reimbursement, and paid parental leave.
  • PTO, holiday pay, and recognition for birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones.

Culture + Legacy
  • A workplace grounded in the Seven Values: Wisdom, Love, Respect, Truth, Humility, Bravery, and Honesty.
  • Opportunities to contribute to the long-term success of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe and Grand Casino community.
  • A culture of creativity, collaboration, servant leadership, and shared purpose.

What You Bring
  • Required: Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Band Member or Descendant.
  • High School Diploma or GED required. Associate or Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or related field preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience in finance, accounting, data analysis, or related administrative/technical roles preferred.
