Job description

The RN Lactation Consultant is responsible for delivering patient care, assessments, and education to support care plans for breastfeeding patients across Mosaic clinics. In consultation with the patient establishes breastfeeding goals based on evidence-based practices, addressing physical, emotional, and cultural needs of the patient.  The RN Lactation Consultant provides evidence-based lactation support to enable patients to achieve their breastfeeding goals in collaboration with the provider and care team members. Assists with breastfeeding program development, reporting, selection of appropriate breastfeeding related supplies and patient educational materials. 

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Clinic Manager, develop breastfeeding program including policies and procedures.
  •  Assess patients’ lactation needs by obtaining medical histories, examining patients, and gathering information about the baby and family setting.
  •  Perform comprehensive nursing assessments of the patient and infant, including vital signs, physical assessment, and identification of complications, within the RN scope of practice.
  •  Administer medications and treatments as ordered by the provider, in accordance with RN scope of practice and Mosaic policy.
  • Collaborate with patient to establish breastfeeding goals based on evidence-based practices and addressing physical, emotional, and cultural needs of the patient.
  • Develop feeding plans to address the nutritional needs of the infant that may include but is not limited to breastfeeding support, breast pumping support, and supplementation as appropriate.
  • Consult, educate, and advise lactating patients with breastfeeding challenges, providing encouragement to support breastfeeding goals.
  • Conduct group sessions to support breastfeeding patients.
  • Provide evidence-based information regarding a mother’s use, during lactation, of medications (over the counter and prescription), alcohol, tobacco and street drugs, and their potential impact on milk production and child safety.
  • Consult with inter-disciplinary team members as required and adjusts plans as indicated to ensure optimal breastfeeding success and achievements of goals.
  • Perform follow-up on breastfeeding patients and baby referring any abnormal findings to provider for review, decision, and final action if needed.
  • Assist with breastfeeding program development, reporting, selection of appropriate breastfeeding related supplies and patient educational materials.
  • Serve as a resource for care team members to support patient breastfeeding.
  • Use effective counselling skills when interacting with clients and other health care providers.
  • Remain current with practice of lactation consulting and professional development.
  • Collaborate with community partners including but not limited to the health system and public health departments.

Work Experience:  One year of experience as a Registered Nurse in Obstetric and/or Newborn nursing required. Community or public health experience preferred. 

Education, certification and licensure: 
Required: Associates degree; Current, unrestricted Oregon RN License; Current International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant Certification (IBCLC) required. Basic life support and Pediatric advanced life support certification required.  Oregon driver’s license required. Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Skills & Knowledge: Enthusiastic about breastfeeding and passionate about helping patients enjoy a positive and successful breastfeeding experience. Identify and address breastfeeding barriers and challenges. Ability to teach and coach patients. Must possess proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer and other office technology (i.e., telephone, fax, etc.). Effective navigation and documentation in an electronic medical record. Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in complex situations is required.
