Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate's degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate's degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
Southwest Virginia Community College invites applicants to apply for the role of Computer Science Faculty member. Responsible for teaching 30 semester hours per year in computer programming (Visual Basic, Java, C++, Python), SQL, networking concepts, networking platforms, Windows server administration, computer repair, cybersecurity, and related courses. Defines learning objectives, prepares and teaches classes, creates a student-oriented learning environment, and evaluates student learning in assigned courses. In addition, incumbent, with an eye toward equity, is expected to engage in curriculum and course development; to serve as academic advisor; participate on college committees and other activities; and to be available to teach day, evenings, and weekends on and off-campus classes in person and online, and to assist in the recruitment, training and support of adjunct instructors within teaching field.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • A master's degree in computer science or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  • Demonstrated industry experience in programming and server administration.
  • Familiar with the community college mission Commitment to inclusive teaching practices.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Previous teaching experience.

Additional Considerations
  • Prior community college teaching experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience teaching online.
  • Previously earned the Certified Ethical Hacker certification.
  • Previously earned CompTIA A+, Network+ and Tech+ certifications.
  • Working knowledge of Canvas and successful completion of coursework demonstrating online instruction expertise.
