Position Description:

Phoenix Group of Virginia is seeking an entry-level IT Support Specialist in Newport News, VA to support day-to-day technology operations for our team and programs at SUPSHIP Newport News. This role provides desktop support, systems administration assistance, and IT coordination in a government-adjacent environment. The ideal candidate is technically curious, reliable, and eager to grow within a defense-focused professional services organization.

Primary Functions:

  • Provide first-line desktop and helpdesk support to staff, including hardware, software, and peripheral troubleshooting.
  • Set up, configure, and maintain workstations, laptops, printers, and other end-user equipment.
  • Support onboarding and offboarding of personnel, including account setup, equipment provisioning, and access coordination.
  • Assist with administration of network accounts, file permissions, and shared drives.
  • Maintain accurate IT asset inventory and equipment tracking records.
  • Coordinate with building IT infrastructure and government network representatives as needed to resolve connectivity or access issues.
  • Support implementation and maintenance of cybersecurity policies and procedures, including software updates and endpoint compliance.
  • Assist with documentation of IT procedures, configurations, and support logs.
  • Escalate complex technical issues to senior IT personnel or external vendors as appropriate.

Position Requirements:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field; or equivalent hands-on technical experience.
  • Basic knowledge of Windows operating systems, Microsoft 365, and common productivity applications.
  • Familiarity with networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, basic LAN/WAN concepts).
  • Strong customer service orientation and communication skills; ability to support non-technical users effectively.
  • Organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage and track multiple open support requests.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in an onsite, professional environment.

Additional Requirements:

  • CompTIA A+, Network+, or Security+ certification (or currently pursuing).
  • Experience supporting users in a government, defense contractor, or regulated environment.
  • Exposure to cybersecurity frameworks (NIST, CMMC, or similar) is a plus.
  • Experience with Active Directory, Group Policy, or remote management tools.
  • Familiarity with government IT access requirements and common access card (CAC) environments is a strong plus.


Work Environment:

This is a fully onsite position based in the Newport News, Virginia area. Work is primarily office-based. Occasional movement between offices, conference rooms, and equipment storage areas is expected. Some travel to partner sites may be required on an infrequent basis.
