What is an associate buyer?

As an associate buyer, you are part of the supply chain and logistics department of a company. Your primary duties are to help manage inventory and purchase high-quality products at the lowest price for your employer. Other responsibilities may include developing merchandising plans, resolving issues with deliveries, and tracking and analyzing trends and consumer needs. Associate buyers may work for grocery stores, big box stores, specialty shops, and in various industries ranging from manufacturing to medical.

How does an associate buyer typically collaborate with other departments during the purchasing process?

As an Associate Buyer, collaboration with other departments is crucial to ensure purchasing decisions align with company goals. You’ll frequently work with inventory planners to monitor stock levels, coordinate with the merchandising team on product selections, and communicate with vendors arranged by the procurement department. Additionally, you may partner with finance to track budgets and with logistics to ensure timely delivery of goods. Effective communication and teamwork are essential for managing timelines, resolving issues, and optimizing the overall supply chain.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate buyer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Buyer, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a bachelor’s degree in business, supply chain, or a related field. Familiarity with procurement software, inventory management systems, and Excel is typically required, and some employers prefer candidates with Certified Purchasing Professional (CPP) credentials. Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship-building abilities help you collaborate effectively with vendors and internal teams. Is an associate buyer higher than an assistant buyer?

An associate buyer is generally a more senior role than an assistant buyer, with greater responsibilities in purchasing decisions and vendor negotiations. Assistant buyers typically support the buying team and handle administrative tasks, while associate buyers often have more autonomy and decision-making authority. The specific hierarchy can vary by company, but usually, the associate buyer position is higher in the purchasing career ladder.

    • Build and maintain strong vendor relationships to ensure a consistent pipeline of light cores.
    • Secure competitive pricing while maintaining quality standards and supply continuity.
    • Actively prospect new vendors through market research, cold outreach, and on-site visits.
    • Represent the company professionally as a primary point of contact for core buying.
    • Travel the assigned region to identify, source, and purchase automotive light cores from vendors, recyclers, body shops, and other suppliers.
  • Logistics & operations
    • Coordinate payment and logistics, including scheduling pickups or deliveries to remanufacturing locations.
    • Transport cores in a company Sprinter van and prep light cores for shipping.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to availability, quality, delivery timing, or vendor concerns.
  • Reporting & cross-functional partnership
    • Maintain accurate records of purchases, pricing, vendor interactions, and deliveries.
    • Monitor regional market trends, pricing fluctuations, and competitor activity.
    • Partner with internal procurement, logistics, and remanufacturing teams to align purchasing with operational needs.

What you'll bring

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in automotive repair, sales, procurement, or core/material buying, preferably automotive-related.
  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Demonstrated success in face-to-face sales or purchasing negotiations.
  • Familiarity with automotive cores, specifically lights (remanufacturing experience a plus).
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport quickly.
  • Comfortable working independently and managing a travel-heavy schedule.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple vendor relationships and transactions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and basic purchasing or CRM tools.
