Job description

Senior Automation Engineering Technician
At Pattern Bioscience, we're tackling antibiotic resistance, named by the CDC as one of the biggest public health challenges of our time. We use AI and single-cell analysis to quickly recognize the bacteria causing an infection and to predict which drugs will cure the infection.
Our team is brought together by shared passion for our mission to improve the world's most important health decisions. However, we're not only invested in combating antibiotic resistance; we're also invested in our people.
We are looking for a teammate, a problem solver, someone who is persistent, passionate, and loves to see projects to completion. As a Senior Automation Engineering Technician, you will join our Consumable and Automation Engineering team and bring your hands-on experience to support maintaining, building, and developing the automation equipment used in consumable manufacturing.
This position offers you the opportunity to join a mission-driven, entrepreneurial company that values openness and collaboration, where you can have ownership and make an impact on lifesaving technology, innovation, and your fellow teammates. You are highly skilled in the operation, maintenance, and construction of mechanical and electromechanical systems. As a Senior Automation Engineering Technician, you will support the Consumable and Automation Engineering team by maintaining automation equipment, building new automation systems, and developing next-generation automation solutions.
Responsibilities
  • Own the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of automation equipment used in consumable manufacturing to maximize uptime and performance
  • Build and assemble automation systems, fixtures, and tooling to support new and existing manufacturing processes
  • Support the development of next-generation automation equipment from concept through commissioning
  • Develop and execute equipment IQ/OQ validation protocols
  • Track and communicate equipment issues and operational findings to engineers; collaborate with the team to drive solutions
  • Assist with management of the engineering labs including safety, inventory, and cleanliness
  • Execute engineering tests with limited supervision to collect equipment performance data or to support automation development activities
  • Assist engineers with development of test specifications, manufacturing instructions, and standard operating procedures
  • Assist with procurement and tracking of spare parts and engineering inventory
  • Ensure compliance with NFPA, OSHA, lock-out, and other applicable safety standards

We'd love to hear from you if you:
  • Are a self-starter with a desire to build equipment and processes that help improve patient outcomes
  • Troubleshoot problems systematically and methodically, basing decisions on evidence
  • Have strong time management skills and communicate conflicts to management and the team
  • Interpret documentation including assembly drawings, CAD models, cable drawings, electrical schematics, and Bills of Materials to execute assembly, repair, and procurement tasks
  • Use basic hand and bench tools, multimeters, calipers, drill presses, and standard shop equipment with high proficiency
  • Have experience with basic shop chemicals and understand the use of corresponding Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
  • Use Word and Excel for tracking work and communicating results

Required Education, Experience, and Technical Skills
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum 8 years total experience in an R&D or automation/manufacturing environment, or assembly-related technical trade
  • Experience using measurement devices such as dial indicators and digital multimeters
  • Able to lift up to 50lbs.

Skills or Attributes Considered a Plus:
  • Can use standard machine shop equipment such as mills and lathes
  • Experience with automated manufacturing equipment (robotics, motion systems, heat sealers, liquid handling)
  • Experience with PLCs, motion controllers, or other automation controls
  • Experience with oscilloscopes, signal generators, and specialized test equipment
  • Soldering, PCBA and harness rework
  • Experience with controls cabinets, including controls wiring, labeling, and schematic capture
  • Experience working on industrial automation equipment such as compressors, pneumatic and servo systems, heat sealers, presses, liquid dispensers, or pick-and-place machines
  • Associate's degree in applied science, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology or similar, or Certificate in Technical trade
