Position Summary Information
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Design and Construction, this position independently supports the planning, coordination, and development of construction and renovation projects on behalf of Slippery rock University. Responsibilities include preparing and updating drawings, maintaining project and record documents, supporting the development of design standards, and managing facility space planning inventory in accordance with university standards, PASSHE policies, regulations and applicable safety laws and rules.
This position emphasizes an interior design background, architecture, or closely related field, with strong skills in space analysis, layout development, and the creation of functional, aesthetically appropriate environments that support campus operations and student success.
Required knowledges, skills, and abilities are as follows:
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of architectural design, interior design, and materials selection.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of construction and cost estimating.
  • Knowledge of the principles of building construction, including common practices and sequences for various architectural elements.
  • Knowledge of the standard reference sources for construction design, which includes costs, principle applications, and characteristics of materials, furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Ability to solve mathematical problems using algebra, plane and solid geometry, and plane trigonometry.
  • Ability to critically review and recognize a sound functional design and select materials to ensure a cost effective design.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, civil, electrical, mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings and specifications using in the design and construction of projects.
  • Ability to interpret, and apply, Federal, State and Local codes, regulations and standards pertinent to construction projects.
  • Ability to assemble architectural drawings and specifications for small projects or components of larger projects.
  • Ability to operate a Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) system and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite to include MS Teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, in English, with campus stakeholders, design professionals, vendors and contractors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, consultants, contractors, government officials and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications
Successful Completion of the program for an Architectural Designer Trainee
OR
One year of professional architectural experience which involved designing components of commercial, institutional, or educational buildings or structures, and a bachelor's degree in architecture or architectural engineering or a closely related field which included major course work in architectural design;
OR
An equivalent combination of experience and training in architectural design work.
Successful performance in an interview and passing a criminal background check.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associates Degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or Architectural Engineering with one (1) year of professional experience, or:
  • Demonstrate having three (3) years of equivalent experience and training in architectural space planning design work, or;
  • Bachelors Degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or Architectural Engineering.
  • Experience with microsoft
  • Ability to operate a Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) system and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite to include MS Teams.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Construction and Cost Estimating
