What is an associate analyst?

Associate Analysts are entry- to mid-level professionals who support senior analysts or managers by conducting research, analyzing data, and preparing reports in their area of expertise. They often work in fields such as finance, business, marketing, or data analysis. Their responsibilities typically include gathering and interpreting data, identifying trends, and providing actionable insights to help organizations make informed decisions. This role is ideal for individuals looking to build analytical skills and gain experience in their chosen industry.

What are some common challenges associate analysts face when transitioning from academic settings to a professional environment?

Associate Analysts often find that adapting to the fast-paced, deadline-driven nature of professional environments can be challenging compared to academic settings. Unlike structured coursework, projects in the workplace may require juggling multiple tasks, collaborating across departments, and responding to shifting priorities. Developing strong communication and time management skills is essential, as is learning to interpret and present data insights tailored to business needs. Support from more experienced team members and training programs often help new analysts bridge the gap and succeed in their roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Analyst, you need strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and a relevant degree in fields like finance, economics, or business. Familiarity with data analysis tools such as Excel, SQL, or business intelligence platforms, along with experience in data visualization software, is often required. Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for accurately interpreting data, providing actionable insights, and effectively supporting decision-making processes within an organization.

Do associate analysts make a lot of money?

Associate analysts typically earn a starting salary that is below senior-level roles but can vary depending on industry, location, and company size. Entry-level salaries often range from $50,000 to $70,000 annually, with potential for increases as they gain experience and develop skills in data analysis, reporting, and tools like Excel or SQL.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly organized, analytical, and motivated Associate Business Analyst to support our Walmart business. This role will work closely with our Sales, Planning, and Replenishment teams to analyze performance, track key business initiatives, and help manage the day-to-day needs of a fast-moving Walmart account.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their career who wants to develop a strong understanding of Walmart, retail analytics, demand planning, and supplier operations. The ideal candidate is highly proficient in Excel, comfortable working with large amounts of data, eager to learn new systems and technologies, and able to communicate and present themselves professionally with both internal teams and Walmart.

Our business operates within fashion-driven categories with large SKU assortments, frequent trend changes, promotions, and seasonal programs. The ability to stay organized, identify trends within the data, and manage multiple priorities will be important to success in this role.

Key Responsibilities

Sales Analytics & Reporting

  • Analyze daily and weekly Walmart sales, inventory, in-stock, and performance trends.
  • Prepare recurring sales reports and business recaps for Sales and Planning leadership.
  • Identify meaningful trends, opportunities, risks, and changes within large SKU-level datasets.
  • Support analysis of item, category, store, and program performance.
  • Assist with preparation for Walmart meetings, line reviews, business reviews, and internal presentations.
  • Develop and maintain Excel-based reporting tools and dashboards.
  • Help improve existing reporting processes through better use of Excel, automation, and AI tools.

Walmart Business Support

  • Support the day-to-day management of the Walmart account.
  • Work with sales leadership to research questions and provide data-driven answers related to the business.
  • Track Walmart promotions, modular changes, new item launches, seasonal programs, and other key business initiatives.
  • Monitor performance before, during, and after promotional periods.
  • Maintain organized records of key programs, commitments, timelines, and follow-up items.
  • Develop a strong working knowledge of Walmart systems, reporting tools, terminology, and processes.

Purchase Order & Inventory Tracking

  • Track inbound purchase orders and expected inventory flow.
  • Monitor purchase order timing and identify potential inventory or supply risks.
  • Help communicate inbound inventory status to Sales, Planning, Replenishment, and Operations teams.
  • Assist in identifying situations where inventory timing could impact sales, promotions, or in-stock performance.

Demand Planning

  • Assist with basic demand planning and forecasting activities.
  • Review historical sales, current trends, inventory levels, promotions, and seasonality when evaluating future demand.
  • Help identify items that may be over-forecasted, under-forecasted, over-inventoried, or at risk of going out of stock.
  • Support planning teams with SKU-level analysis across large assortments.

AI & Process Improvement

  • Utilize AI tools to improve productivity, reporting, analysis, and problem-solving.
  • Look for opportunities to automate repetitive analytical tasks.
  • Develop an understanding of how AI can be used alongside Excel and traditional retail analytics.
  • Continuously look for better ways to analyze, organize, and communicate information.

Qualifications

Required

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Comfortable working with large datasets and detailed SKU-level information.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Professional demeanor and the ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership and retail partners.
  • Willingness to learn new systems, analytical tools, and technologies.

Preferred

  • Previous experience working with Walmart, a Walmart supplier, or another major retailer.
  • Familiarity with Walmart systems, Retail Link, Luminate, or similar retail reporting platforms.
  • Experience with sales analysis, replenishment, forecasting, demand planning, or inventory management.
  • Advanced Excel capabilities, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, Power Query, and data visualization.
  • Interest in becoming a subject matter expert in Excel and retail analytics.
  • Experience using AI tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or similar platforms.
  • Experience working in fashion, home, apparel, seasonal, or other trend-driven retail categories is a plus.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who is more than just comfortable with numbers. The right candidate will be curious about why the numbers are changing and what we should do about it.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Analytical and naturally curious.
  • Extremely organized and dependable.
  • Comfortable digging into details without losing sight of the bigger picture.
  • Eager to become an expert in Excel, Walmart analytics, and retail planning.
  • Interested in learning how AI can improve the way work gets done.
  • Able to take complex information and present it clearly and professionally.
  • Comfortable interacting with senior leaders and presenting themselves in a polished, executive manner.
  • Willing to take ownership of projects and continue learning as their responsibilities grow.

Growth Opportunity

The Associate Business Analyst will gain broad exposure to sales strategy, demand planning, replenishment, forecasting, inventory management, retail analytics, and customer-facing account management.

This role is well suited for someone who wants to build a career within retail and Walmart account management. As the individual develops their analytical skills and knowledge of the business, there will be opportunities to take on greater ownership and responsibility across Sales, Planning, and Analytics.
