What is an associate accountant?

Associate Accountants are entry-level professionals who assist with the preparation, maintenance, and analysis of financial records in organizations. Their duties typically include bookkeeping, processing invoices, reconciling accounts, and supporting audits. They work under the supervision of senior accountants or accounting managers and play a key role in ensuring financial accuracy and compliance. This position is often a stepping stone to more advanced accounting roles as individuals gain experience and professional certifications.

What does an associate accountant do?

An associate accountant manages payments and accounts receivables at a company. In this career, your duties and responsibilities include reviewing invoices, audits, fund requests from various departments within the business, and financial records. You also perform data entry and file accounting data from the different departments and analyze the information. You may also be responsible for checking the work of other accountants to ensure it is mathematically and factually accurate. As an associate accountant, you are required to follow all state and federal compliance laws.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Accountant, you need a strong grasp of accounting principles, attention to detail, and a relevant degree such as a bachelor's in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks or SAP, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Excel, is typically required, and some roles may prefer candidates with CPA certification or progress toward it. Strong organizational skills, analytical thinking, and effective communication help you manage tasks efficiently and collaborate with colleagues. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulations, and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the accounting team.

What are some common challenges faced by associate accountants in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

In their first year, Associate Accountants often encounter challenges such as adapting to complex accounting software, managing tight deadlines during month-end close, and balancing multiple tasks. Building strong organizational skills and proactively seeking guidance from senior team members can help ease the transition. Regular communication with colleagues and participating in team meetings also support knowledge sharing and problem-solving, making it easier to adjust to the fast-paced environment.

Job description

Imagine seeing a skyline and knowing you helped build it. At Adi Development Group, that's not a metaphor - it's your Monday morning. We're one of Canada's most innovative real estate developers with over $3 Billion in built value under development across the GTHA, and we're looking for people who want their work to literally reshape communities. We move fast, we think like owners, and we don't settle for "the way it's always been done."ย

Our culture is built on candour, curiosity and teamwork. Adians challenge each other's thinking, experiment fearlessly, and show up for one another - whether you're in your first week or your fifth year. When we make a decision, we commit and move forward together. One team, one mission: build better, for everyone.ย

Your Impact:ย
ย

This isn't a back-office number-crunching role. As an Associate Accountant at Adi, you'll be immersed in the financial operations of multi-million dollar development projects - supporting our accounting team and partnering with Construction PMs, Sales & Marketing, and senior leadership to keep every dollar on track from groundbreaking to closing day.ย

  • Support monthly project draws and budget variance analysis - you'll gain hands-on exposure to real-time decisions on construction projectsย

  • Prepare, review, and maintain payment draw schedules in accordance with internal processesย

  • Complete GL reconciliations, bank reconciliations, and project financial reports accurately and on timeย

  • Work with budget owners to refine cash flow forecasts, monitor project risks, and flag potential issues earlyย

  • Reviewย invoices processed by Accounts Payableย for coding accuracy, budget alignment, and required approvalsย

  • Maintain project budgets in Sage and support accurate data flow between Sage and Procoreย

  • Partner with Construction Project Managers to review coding accuracy, identify budget variances early, and learn the operational side of development accounting from the ground upย

  • Assist the Controller, Sales & Marketing, and external counsel with closing site records and unit closing statementsย

  • Prepare and file HST returns and T5018s accurately and on timeย

  • Support process improvements and take on additional responsibilities as neededย

ย
What You Bring:ย
ย
  • 1-2 years of accounting experience, ideally in construction or real estate development - or a recent graduate who's eager to build a career in project accountingย

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration or a closely related fieldย

  • CPA designation in progress - you're on the path and committed to the professionย

  • Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, formulas, and working with large data setsย

  • Solid understanding of accounting principles and strong attention to detailย

  • Hands-on experience with accounting software (Sage experience is a plus)ย

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage deadlinesย

  • A proactive mindset with a willingness to learn, ask questions, and solve problemsย

  • High integrity, confidentiality and professionalism in everything you doย

  • Genuine curiosity and a drive for continuous improvement and process optimizationย

ย
Why You'll Love Working Here:
  • Learning & Development Reimbursement:ย We invest in your growth with tuition and education reimbursements so you never stop levelling up.ย

  • Competitive Paid Time Off:ย Vacation, Wellness, and Sick daysย -ย ย becauseย rest fuels great work.ย

  • Competitive Salaries:ย Regular compensation market reviews ensure your total package stays ahead of the curve.ย

  • Employee Home Ownership Program:ย Dream of living in one of our communities? Eligible Adians receive a discount off the purchase price.ย

  • Comprehensive Benefits Plan:ย Full coverage for dental, prescriptions, vision, paramedical, life insurance and more for you and your dependents.ย

  • Flexible Health, Lifestyle & Wellness Spending Account:ย Annual spending accounts for fitness, gym memberships, family & pet needs, extra health coverage and more.ย

  • Dedicated Online Mental Health Partner:ย 24/7 access to professional online therapy because your wellbeing matters.ย

$55,000 - $70,000 a year
