What does an associate accountant do?

An associate accountant manages payments and accounts receivables at a company. In this career, your duties and responsibilities include reviewing invoices, audits, fund requests from various departments within the business, and financial records. You also perform data entry and file accounting data from the different departments and analyze the information. You may also be responsible for checking the work of other accountants to ensure it is mathematically and factually accurate. Strong organizational skills, analytical thinking, and effective communication help you manage tasks efficiently and collaborate with colleagues. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulations, and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the accounting team.

What are some common challenges faced by associate accountants in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Job description

We\'re looking for an experienced, driven Senior Accountant to own execution of our monthly close and serve as a trusted finance point of contact for store department leaders. This is a highly visible, load-bearing role: you\'ll take ownership of a full book of journal entries, reconciliations, and PBCs, working within a close structure where the Assistant Controller manages close and the Controller finalizes the financials and delivers them to the CFO for sign-off and issuance. You\'ll also provide day-to-day guidance to a Staff Accountant, so this role combines strong technical ownership with the start of people leadership. We want someone who takes pride in a clean, timely close, is comfortable being the department\'s first call, and actively looks for ways to automate and improve how the work gets done.

What You\'ll DoMonth-End Close Ownership
  • Own close execution end-to-end: prepare and post journal entries (accruals, reclasses, recurring entries), complete reconciliations, and manage the PBC schedule
  • Take ownership of an existing book of reconciliations, journal entries, and PBCs, stabilizing and standardizing this work overtime
  • Self-review your work product before it moves to the Assistant Controller for close management and the Controller for final review, ahead of CFO sign-off and issuance
  • Reconcile key high-risk receivable and accrual accounts to ensure Balance Sheet accuracy and assist with variance analysis
  • Review Income Statement expense lines and provide variance explanations for financial summaries
  • Support preparation of financial statements and internal reports, including allocations, rollforwards, and tie-outs
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and review for a Staff Accountant, supporting their development and the quality of their work
Department Partnership
  • Serve as the named finance point of contact for one or more store departments, giving department leaders a clear, consistent line into Finance
  • Field and route department financial questions, connecting leaders to the right analysis or analyst when a request goes beyond your scope
External Audit Coordination
  • Prepare PBCs for the external audit, working directly with the audit team to keep the request list moving on schedule
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for auditor questions during fieldwork, researching and resolving items directly where possible
  • Review audited financial statements for accuracy prior to finalization
Tax Compliance
  • Prepare PBCs supporting Federal and State income tax return preparation
  • Review completed Federal and State tax returns and tie out supporting schedules to the general ledger
Additional Responsibilities
  • Maintain and update ERP templates and standard reports, keeping them current as reporting needs change
  • Support insurance reporting requirements and coordinate policy renewal processes
  • Coordinate physical inventory logistics and scheduling with store and warehouse operations
About You
  • CPA with a minimum of 5 years of experience
  • Solid understanding and working knowledge of GAAP, including debit/credit accounting, complex reconciliations, and variance analysis
  • Experience with general ledger/ERP systems (Oracle PeopleSoft or similar) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, pivot tables) is required
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills combined with a sense of urgency
  • Self-starter who functions well with minimal supervision
  • Ability to independently identify opportunities to automate accounting tasks, improve existing processes, and enhance accuracy
  • Experience reviewing or mentoring the work of junior accounting staff is a plus
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to confidently interact with various individuals throughout the department and company
  • Strict attention to detail, highly organized, and able to complete time-sensitive tasks effectively
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other departments and function as a team player
Why Dierbergs is right for you
  • Health and retirement benefits including medical, dental, short-term and long-term disability, 401(k) with company match, FSA, and life insurance
  • Weekly pay
  • Paid time off provided, including sick days
  • Hybrid work schedule and flexibility
  • Employee Assistance Program for you and your family to assist in many of life\'s challenges, from short-term counseling, legal questions to financial guidance
  • Associate-only savings, free products, bonus points, sweepstakes and more – being a part of our team has its perks with Dierbergs Rewards
  • Wellness initiatives and volunteer opportunities to keep you healthy, engaged and involved
  • Rewards, recognition and appreciation programs and events to spotlight you AND your exceptional talents
