Position Summary:
The Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center (TRSAC) in Oyster Bay, NY is the first Audubon Songbird Sanctuary in the U.S. established in 1923. The land was gifted by the Roosevelt family to honor President Theodore Roosevelt, who is buried next door a Youngs Memorial Cemetery. The TRSAC recently completed a $3 million renovation of the grounds, gardens, and center, opening the brand-new Wood Thrush Education and Visitor Center in May 2023. The TRSAC is 14 acres of wooded trails, including a large native demonstration garden.
The center and grounds are open year-round, attracting nature enthusiasts from near and far. Being a part of the Audubon team means making a difference for birds and conservation. The Seasonal Center Engagement Assistant position is a part-time, seasonal position assisting with essential day-to-day center functions and visitor engagement. The Seasonal Center Engagement Assistant supports the TRSAC by ensuring all visitors and program participants are engaged, animal ambassadors are cared for, and the building is running smoothly.
The Seasonal Center Engagement Assistant will be on-site and must provide their own transportation to and from the center.

This role is on-site based out of our Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center (TRSAC) in Oyster Bay, NY.
Compensation:
$19.00 per hour
Additional Job Description
Essential Functions
  • Work at the front desk of the Visitor's Center on Saturdays and two weekdays, or for events as needed, such as plant sales, Earth Day, bird walks, and volunteer events.
  • Serve as a key holder, ensuring facilities are opened, closed, and secured at appropriate times.
  • Provide staffing support as needed for the gift shop, admissions, and visitor experiences, including public programs, Teen Conservation Ambassadors group meetings, camps, and volunteer groups that are at the center.
  • Inspect Visitor's Center before, during, and after shifts whenever on site. Includes but not limited to; cleaning the outside of the front of the Visitor's Center to the parking lot area, rearranging and re-stocking pamphlets and trail maps, ensuring thermostats are on or off, doors and windows locked, and garbage emptied.
  • Support the public programs coordinator with social media posts and communications as needed.
  • Coordinate volunteer onboarding and scheduling, using Volgistics software.
  • Assist as needed with admin, camper tracking documents, Camp Docs reports, databases, bulk mailings, and other items.
  • Assist the Public Programs Coordinator in leading programs both on and off-site.
  • Assist in supervising volunteers assigned to support the front desk and Visitor's Center.
  • Assist with gift shop; count bank, enter new stock into inventory, stock shelves, run reports, advertisement and promotions, etc.
  • Provide basic landscaping support around the immediate building perimeter to ensure the site is attractive to guests in the warmer months, including weed pulling, watering and upkeep
  • Assist in cleaning the Visitor's Center as needed.
  • Participate in scheduled staff meetings and training courses.
  • Support other departments, programs, and events as needed, including maintaining building supplies.
  • Partner with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:
  • Commitment to the Audubon mission.
  • GED or high school diploma required.
  • Valid driver's license with reliable transport required.
  • Experience interacting with the public in a fast-paced environment; ability to remain composed under pressure; experience working at a museum, historic site, or other public-facing facility a plus.
  • Bird and plant identification experience (especially as it relates to Long Island) a plus, but not required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to relate to and communicate with staff, volunteers, vendors, and the community.
  • Self-starter with the ability to organize/prioritize workload and complete assignments on time.
  • Must be able to work weekends, evenings, and holidays in summer weather conditions. Ability to maneuver to 25 lbs with or without accommodation
  • First Aid and CPR certification is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required. Social media experience and graphic design are desired.
  • Multi-lingual preferred (Spanish, English, ASL, etc.).
  • Adaptability and flexibility to a changing environment.
