Job description

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) is seeking a strategic and experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead the organization’s financial strategy and operations. Reporting to the President/CEO, the CFO serves as a key member of the management team, driving long-term financial planning and organizational sustainability. This role oversees all core financial functions including budgeting, accounting, investments, tax, and treasury functions. The CFO also provides financial leadership and counsel to NAHB’s affiliated organizations, including Home Innovation Research Labs, National Housing Endowment, National Housing Center Corporation, BUILD-PAC, Home Building Industry Disaster Relief Fund, and International Housing Association. This position follows NAHB’s hybrid work schedule, with employees working in person three days per week and remotely two days per week.

The successful candidate will bring both strategic perspective and strong execution, with the ability to lead through complexity, develop strong teams, and partner effectively across a member-driven organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, execution, and reporting of NAHB’s financial strategy, including oversight of the policies, systems, and processes that support effective financial planning and management.
  • Lead annual budget preparation and ensure alignment with strategic priorities and organizational goals.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the President/CEO on financial and organizational matters and contribute to strategic planning as a member of the senior management team.
  • Direct the association’s financial policies, practices, and controls, including accounting, credit, insurance, investments, tax, purchasing, and treasury operations.
  • Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure the accuracy and reliability of financial statements.
  • Lead preparation for the annual independent audit and ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting, including tax filings and government agency reports.
  • Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Budget Committee and Audit Committee, providing timely and transparent financial information to support oversight and decision-making.
  • Provide regular, forward-looking financial analysis and reporting to the Board, including performance trends, forecasts, and strategic insights.
  • Oversee the association’s investment portfolios to balance risk, return, and liquidity while maintaining adequate working capital.
  • Partners with banks, investment managers, and financial advisors to support capital needs and financing strategies.
  • Lead and inspire the Financial Services Group by fostering a collaborative, high-performing culture built on transparency, and continuous improvement. Set clear priorities, monitor performance, and oversee staff recruitment, development, and training.
  • Represent NAHB on financial matters at conferences and industry events and provide support to state and local Home Builders Associations (HBAs) as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field required; CPA, MBA, or advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive financial leadership experience, with at least 10 years in a senior or executive finance role (e.g. VP, Controller, Treasurer, or CFO).
  • Experience in an association, nonprofit, or similarly complex organization strongly preferred.
  • Deep expertise in accounting standards, financial controls, audits, and regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated experience managing treasury functions, investment portfolios, and capital planning.
  • Strong track record of engaging with boards, audit committees, and governance bodies.
  • Proven ability to lead, develop, and retain a high-performing finance team.
  • Exceptional analytical, communication, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Collaborative leadership style with the ability to work effectively across teams and with senior volunteer leadership.
