Job description

Certified Nursing Assistant

Under the supervision of the school administrator, the CNA will support students by providing individualized care to meet specific health needs and help students achieve their academic and independence goals. This role involves working closely with teachers, intervention specialists, and other school staff to track student care needs and progress.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one or team care to students needing additional support.
  • Assist with medical needs, which may include but are not limited to the following:
    • Calculation of insulin doses (providing appropriate training on the student's specific method of calculation is provided)
    • Pharmacy or prescriber-prepared hand-held inhalant medication administration
    • Clean intermittent/non-complex bladder catheterization
    • Student-specific emergency medications
    • Assembly of supplies and supervision of student fingersticks for blood sugar, with appropriate training for individual student-specific needs
  • Assist in lifting and positioning student, diapering, and feeding
  • Assist during lunch and snack with tasks such as feeding, opening thermos/carton, navigating lunch line
  • Remove and attach splints/braces
  • Observe and document student performance and progress
  • Provide feedback to school staff on student progress and areas needing further support
  • Supervise playground, offsite activities, and independent wheelchair/walker travel to ensure safety.
  • Monitor students to develop independence in daily living skills
  • Transfer students to and from the bus
  • Assist in supervising during non-instructional periods such as snack time, study hall and/or lunch period, free time and/or recess, bathroom breaks, and preparation for gym, lunch, bus, etc.
  • Remove and put on outer clothing for arrival, recess, and dismissal times
  • Assist in implementing behavior management programs
  • Must know of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools Employee Handbook
  • Maintain confidentiality of student health information
  • Regular and consistent attendance
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant Certification or Medical Assistant Certification.
  • In lieu of a C.N.A. or a M.A. the equivalent of 2 years of college (60 semester credits) or an Associate's degree in a medical field with experience.
  • If not currently qualified, previous medical experience and the willingness to sign a letter of agreement, complete a C.N.A. training program and become a C.N.A. or willingness to complete an Associate's degree.
  • A high degree of patience, ability and willingness to learn new skills and take direction.
  • Ability to demonstrate confidentiality, ethics, technical skills, and clinical knowledge.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with district staff and the public.
  • Ability to assume responsibility, display initiative, and exercise good judgment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
