What is an assistant technical designer?

Assistant Technical Designers are entry-level professionals in the fashion and apparel industry who assist technical designers in developing and perfecting garment samples. They are responsible for preparing technical specification packs, measuring samples, communicating fit comments, and ensuring garments meet quality and design standards. Their role bridges the gap between design and production teams, helping to translate creative ideas into manufacturable products. Assistant Technical Designers often participate in fittings, update technical drawings, and maintain records, playing a crucial role in the product development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant technical designer?

To thrive as an Assistant Technical Designer, you need a solid grasp of garment construction, patternmaking, and technical specifications, usually backed by a degree in fashion design or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software (like Adobe Illustrator and Gerber), tech pack creation, and fit evaluation tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams set candidates apart. These abilities ensure accurate product development, efficient workflow, and seamless execution from concept to production.

How does an assistant technical designer typically collaborate with other departments during the product development process?

Assistant Technical Designers work closely with design, pattern making, and production teams to ensure that design concepts are accurately translated into technical specifications. They often attend fittings, communicate adjustments, and help resolve construction issues by providing technical insights. Collaboration is key, as they must balance the creative vision with practical manufacturing considerations, often acting as a bridge between creative and technical teams. Regular communication and teamwork are crucial for meeting deadlines and ensuring product quality.

What is the difference between Assistant Technical Designer vs Technical Designer?
