Job description

CERTIFIED POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position:  School Counselor / Penn High School

Work Schedule 183.5 days or according to school-year calendar, additional 10 days paid per diem as an extra-curricular stipend       

Evaluation: Annually, according to PHMTA Agreement

Reports to: Building Principal

Summary: Provide a learning climate that encourages student motivation and leads students toward the fulfillment of their individual potential for intellectual, social/emotional, psychomotor growth and maturation by providing guidance that will assist students to develop a positive and realistic self concept to assist them in overcoming any personal problems that may impede their learning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Participate in registration of new students and assist in acclimating them with school procedures, activities and learning opportunities
  2. Assist with development, coordination and facilitation of advisory lessons for staff and students.
  3. Coordinate career exploration activities.
  4. Assist students in course selections and course scheduling while assisting them in identifying their individual abilities.
  5. Assist with implementation of restorative practices with students and staff.
  6. Consult with teachers about students with difficulties that affect their school progress.
  7. Support a positive school and home relationship and meet with parents when necessary to foster that status.
  8. Cooperatively organize and administer the standardized testing program and interpret results to students, parents and teachers.
  9. Prepare evaluations, reports, surveys and studies necessary to foster the growth of guidance services.
  10. Assist with coordination and facilitation of 21st Century Scholars programming.
  11. Assist with the master schedule for building as needed.
  12. Assist with standardized test facilitation and proctoring as needed.
  13. Participate and assist with activities related to the district's mental health crisis team.
  14. Attend meetings and participate in school activities when related to the instructional program.
  15. Meet with counselors to coordinate counseling services.
  16. Facilitate individual and group counseling to help promote students' success within the school setting.
  17. Assist with multiple facets of the special education referral process.
  18. Facilitate and manage the implementation of 504 Plans.
  19. Require students to maintain orderly standards of behavior on school property and seek support when needed.
  20. Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and Board policy and the Teacher Agreement.
  21. Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, colleagues, self and facilities from unwarranted abuse.
  22. Conduct suicide risk assessments when needed and follow the district's suicide prevention and response administrative guidelines.
  23. Assist with suicide prevention activities as needed.
  24. Participate on the school's threat assessment team, when needed.
  25. Cooperate with other staff members and supporting personnel to ensure a quality-learning environment.
  26. Follow other directives from the Principal, the Assistant Principal and the Superintendent that serve to improve services to the students and patrons of the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation.

Qualification Requirements:

  1. Current Indiana School Services License as a School Counselor.
  2. Excellent communication skills-oral, written, and interpersonal. Detail oriented.
  3. Excellent work habits, attendance record and successfully complete and pass all criminal history and child abuse clearances.
  4. Shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

Sensory Requirements ~ Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. All tasks require oral communications ability.
