Job Description:
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Support the mission, vision, and values of SRC and Director of Perioperative Services.
  • Communicates identified plan for sterile processing services to Director of Perioperative Services.
  • Direct and coordinate all activities necessary for the timely, proficient, and competent provision of sterile and unsterile surgical related supplies, equipment, and services for the care and treatment of patients in accordance with current, accepted practices as established by The Joint Commission (JCAHO), AAMI, AORN, and Sterile Processing professional organizations and the Administration of Scottish Rite for Children
  • Effectively coordinate and integrate department services in the primary functions of the organization with the responsibility of assisting caregivers in providing excellent quality care
  • Coordinate and integrate interdepartmental and intradepartmental products and services by maintaining communication between other departments
  • Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory levels of surgical implants and related supplies by establishing and maintaining minimum and maximum stock levels
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate Sterile Processing Department policies and guidelines
  • Identify, develop, update, implement, and train staff on performance improvement/quality control monitoring of cleaning, decontamination, assembly, packaging, sterilization, record keeping, and issuing of surgical instruments and implants that guide and support the provision of quality services
  • Recommend space and resource utilization necessary for efficient department operation
  • Recommend sources for provision of services not available at the hospital
  • Achieve goals through effective management of staff
  • Determine the ability and competence of staff who perform departmental functions through performance appraisals
  • Interview and select candidates, with the input from the Director of Perioperative Services, for open positions; actively participate in and support performance improvement
  • Evaluate and enhance the performance of services provided through quality monitoring and process improvement mechanisms
  • Maintain performance improvement programs and appropriately address identified areas for performance improvement
  • Ensure and maintain an adequate inventory of departmental and operational supplies
  • Support and participate in continuing professional development of staff
  • Participate in the formulation of the annual operating and capital budget
  • Assist in the monitoring of expenses to remain within budget guidelines
  • Maintain on-going professional growth and development
  • And other duties assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities
  • High school graduate or equivalent required
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a hospital Sterile Processing Department required
  • Maintain Certified Technician and/or Certified Supervisor status (Central Supply Processing Department Technician (CSPDT), or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification)
  • Basic computer skills required
  • Advance knowledge of accepted practices and techniques for cleaning, decontamination, assembly, packaging, sterilization, record keeping, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments and implants as well as safety and infection control is mandatory
  • Numerical and clerical aptitude required to record orders, receipts issues, and credits to implant inventory and to verify accurate records of sterilization processes, to document performance improvement/quality control monitory activities, and to complete staff performance appraisals
  • Advance knowledge of applicable accreditation standards and other regulatory entries imperative
  • Experience with surgical cart case system required
  • Experience with sterilization techniques and sterilization quality monitoring programs required
  • Good communication skills are necessary to effectively interact with others.
