Job Summary
The major responsibility of this position is to apply various acting, communication, and feedback skill sets as set forth by the parameters of a given event or exercise. Standardized Patients (SPs) perform for learners from various colleges on the WesternU Pomona campus as well as outside clients as needed. Performances require a realistic portrayal of a patient or client involving simulating physical signs and symptoms, responding to verbal cues from the learner in a standardized manner that is dictated by the case materials, and/or providing an accurate assessment of the learners' clinical and interpersonal skills verbally and/or through documentation. SPs will often participate in non-invasive physical examinations with learners as part of the learning experience. The SP must be able to perform and assess repeatedly throughout a session without losing accuracy or standardization from previous encounters or fellow SPs.
The SP reports directly to the Director and Assistant Director of the Office of Medical Simulation. For individual learning events, employee will be scheduled, trained, and supervised by the Standardized Patient Educator leading the event.

Individuals must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
  • Must be highly dependable and punctual
  • Must demonstrate flexibility, adaptability and reliability with:
    - Scheduling and assignments
    - Performances; encounters require varying skill sets depending on the college, overseeing faculty, and level of learner
  • Must possess strong communication skills, both written and spoken, and be able to:
    - Understand and follow instructions
    - Work in a professional manner when interacting with learners, faculty, supervisors and peers
    - Accept ongoing feedback from facilitators and incorporate this into case simulation
    - Provide constructive feedback to learners and colleagues
  • Must have strong reading and writing skills in order to:
    - Absorb and use the detailed case training and exam procedural information
    - Accurately and consistently complete assessments
  • Must have excellent ability to recall learned performance.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to learn and adjust to feedback from Coaches and Standardized Patient Educators and consistently simulate a case scenario in an accurate, reliable and professional manner.
  • Must be comfortable participating in repeated physical examination maneuvers. This includes:
    - Simulating all aspects of scenarios, including history of current problem, affect/behavior and physical findings, in a standardized, accurate, and reliable manner
    - Wearing a hospital gown with only undergarments underneath, while on camera and/or observed live through an observation window or video monitor
    - Being willing to be recorded during simulations
  • Strong attention to detail is essential

Required Qualifications
Experience with software programs and computer skills required.
Preferred Qualifications
Applicants with acting or education experience are encouraged to apply, though this is not an obligatory skill set.
Experience as a Standardized Patient preferred.
