Assistant Riggers effectively and efficiently work with the Lead Rigger to install, maintain, repair, and replace sailboat rigging and sail systems. Must be mechanically inclined and experienced in use of basic hand tools, air tools and electric power tools. Expected to retain trainings and be able to work on their own when needed and appropriate within in the 90day trial period. This role may also be referred to as Technician (Rigger).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Unstep and step masts
  • Assemble and disassemble spars
  • Tune standing rigging
  • Connect and troubleshoot mast lights and wiring
  • Install booms, sails, running rigging
  • Prepare sailboats to safely sail
  • Splice lines, service winches and furling systems-both manual and electrical/hydraulic.
  • Service sailboat steering systems and deck hardware
  • Wax and clean spars
  • Inspect and estimate repairs
  • Must possess own tools
  • Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager

Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
  • Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required related training.
  • Wear proper personal protective equipment (may include safety glasses, gloves, life jackets and/or hard hats) as required for the task or work area.
  • Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately.

Technical and Physical Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Sailing knowledge preferred
  • Hoisting/Crane Operator experience preferred
  • Previous experience preferred, willing to train
  • ABYC and/or manufacturer certifications preferred
  • Ability to ascend and descend a ladder
  • Must carry own tools
  • Familiarity with boats and nomenclature
  • Ability to lift 100 pounds
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Basic boat handling skills preferred
  • Ability to hang, move, twist, and climb with loads
  • Must be able to go aloft
  • Any skills considered standard that a Technician should possess
