Job description

Why This Role Exists

This is not a typical Project Manager hire. We are building the next layer of leadership at VonArx Engineering. As we scale, our President/Principal Engineer needs a trusted right-hand- someone who can lead the engineering team day-to-day and own project delivery. If you want to help build something, not just work inside it, this is the opportunity.

Position Summary

The Senior Project Manager serves as the operational and technical lead for VonArx Engineering's engineering staff and project portfolio. Reporting directly to the CEO and President/Principal Engineer, this person oversees all project delivery and mentors and develops the engineering team.

Who Thrives Here

You have outgrown being purely technical and want to lead. You have managed projects and people, and you are ready to own outcomes at a higher level. You are energized by the idea of joining a firm at a pivotal growth stage where your decisions matter, your leadership shapes the culture, and your trajectory is genuinely tied to the firm's success. You do not need hand-holding; you do not wait to be told what to do, and you treat every project like your name is on it because, in this role, it will be.

Compensation:

$105,000 - $141,000 yearly

Responsibilities:

ENGINEERING LEADERSHIP

  • Oversee the day-to-day performance of all engineering staff: engineers, CAD designers, and project managers

  • Lead and enforce firmwide QA/QC standards, design practices, and deliverable quality

  • Monitor team workloads, deadlines, and resource allocation; proactively surface issues to leadership

  • Serve as a mentor, coach, and technical resource for engineering staff at all levels

  • Champion a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional excellence

PROJECT DELIVERY

  • Manage a portfolio of civil and structural projects from kickoff through closeout

  • Serve as Engineer of Record on assigned projects; review and seal plans per Missouri P.E. requirements

  • Own project scopes, schedules, budgets, and client communication on assigned work

  • Lead client meetings, agency coordination, and municipal submittals

  • Coordinate multi-discipline efforts and resolve technical issues at the project level

  • Lead in the preparation of proposals, fee estimates, and scope development

FIRM DEVELOPMENT

  • Build and document engineering processes and SOPs to reduce institutional knowledge dependency

  • Support hiring decisions, onboarding of new engineering staff, and team structure planning

  • Represent the firm professionally with clients, referral partners, and at industry events

  • Operate with an ownership mindset, caring about outcomes, not just outputs

Qualifications:

REQUIRED

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

  • Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Missouri

  • 8+ years of progressive civil and/or structural engineering experience

  • Demonstrated track record of managing engineering projects and client relationships

  • Experience leading and mentoring engineering staff

  • Strong proficiency in Civil 3D and/or AutoCAD

  • Excellent communication skills: written, verbal, and in client-facing settings

PREFERRED

  • Multi-state P.E. licensure (IL, CO preferred) or willingness to obtain

  • Experience in site development, land development, grading, drainage, and stormwater management

  • Background in both private development and public/municipal project work

  • Familiarity with Missouri and regional permitting processes

  • Experience in a small or boutique engineering firm environment

  • Demonstrated interest in firm leadership, business development, or ownership
